Remove Curse scroll doesn't remove curse...

Hey all, newbie Angband player here (only 6 months!) having a problem in the newest Vanilla build (3.1.1.1626 beta) on Mac OsX 10.6.2

I read an unidentified scroll that blasted my weapon with a curse. I am unsure how to tell the difference between a regular curse and an uber curse, but I assume as I'm only lvl 11, I didn't run into anything too gnarly. Anyway, I've read maybe 5 scrolls of Remove Curse, and the damn thing is still cursed...can't un-wield it.

Is this a bug? Am I doing something wrong? I've read about the *Remove Curse* scroll bug, but this is not that.

A curse weapon scroll (which is what you found) gives your weapon a heavy curse. You'll need a ?*remove curse* to unwield it. There's also a chance to remove the curse with a scroll of enchant weapon (to-hit or to-dam), but I think that can only work if the weapon doesn't have any minuses (-x -x) after reading the scroll.
I'm pretty sure there are plans to change the way curses work at some point.
Even on the early levels, there is some chance of finding objects native to deep levels, it's just not as likely. So you can occationally find stuff like curse weapon scrolls on dl11. It also means you can occationally find good stuff like banishment scrolls or potions of strength on dl11, but it's pretty rare either way.

It is an uber curse. You just got extra lucky. Or else the RNG wants you to play a differenct race/class combo.

Very lucky indeed. Just won't comment on what kind of luck. At level 11, you might as well do a suicide dive. You'll be wanting to start a new character soon enough anyway.

What you have is heavy curse after reading curse weapon. That can be removed by succesfully enchanting weapon to positive values (someone said that this is changed and any succesful enchant has chance of breaking curse) or by *Remove Curse* scroll or priest prayer Dispel Curse. Normal Remove Curse doesn't work.

Get scrolls of enchant weapon, find disenchanter and let it disenchant your weapon to (+0,+0) (remove all other gear before that). Then read enchantment. Repeat. If it has already negative values use those enchantment scrolls right away.

Or you could take this as learning experience and try to manage without decent melee-weapon for a while. Use wands, rods, missiles and occassionally your cursed melee-weapon if those wont work (you still get benefit from melee to_dam and to_hit bonuses added to weapon, so it just is weak weapon, not completely useless weapon).

Well, that explains it. I was unsure of what kind of curse a Curse Weapon scroll put on my whip. I might try the disenchanter eye trick if I find one on the way down. Turns out that really good feeling wasn't so good after all...

On the subject of curses, if you can only remove curse on items you have equipped, how do you un-curse Iron Shots? I found some cursed ego shots of Backbiting, but I don't know how to uncurse those either...

There should just be a prompt when you use the scroll that asks what item you want to target. Or target all items.

Im sure not the specialist here but i think you *never* want to use a "XXX of backbiting" except with Bora the masochist as a character.
But for the matter of uncursing - i think you can uncurse when you have it in you inventory. No need to wear.

Don't listen to him. The RNG granting a really good item, early in the game, is usually a death curse. Getting heavily cursed early on is certainly a portent of great success for this character. It can be easily overcome with a little patience.

If you have the GP, don't worry about the disenchanter eye. Just enchant away, providing the scrolls are available in town.

Getting rid of cursed ammo is just a matter of (v) throwing it away, isn't it?

It's also worth noting that in HEAD you no longer need the disenchanter eye... your chance to break the curse isn't less when +tohit is higher than +0, and is also independent of whether you succeed in enchanting it to a higher +tohit.

So just try reading +tohit and +todmg scrolls until the curse is broken, or you run out.

EDIT: I just realized you said you're playing 1626, before this change (I think).

Well, I solved the issue with repeated enchant scrolls, and now I seem to be even MORE lucky. It took 7 or 8 scrolls to get back to (+0,+0), but as soon as it did, the enchant was broken. I did a happy little dance and WoR back into the dungeon, and now I've been getting 'Very Good" level feelings like CRAZY. Strange that all I got were uninteresting and peaceful places before, but I swear 3 levels in a row have been either really lucky or very good...Got some sweet boots of free action and frost shots (guess the RNG felt bad about that whole Shots of Backbiting business!) There may be something to that theory about an early game uber curse 'marking' your @ for greatness!

Heh. Don't get too happy or it'll switch right back to hurting you again.

Early on you pretty much can't get good level feelings because the game doesn't have much to work with. Later in the game they get more common.

Same thing just happened to me in my nice lvl 27 priest... I was trying to play this game without carrying 20 identify scrolls into the dungeon and figured I wouldn't get blasted by any nasty scrolls that early. Didn't know about the enchantment trick. I think I will try that. Thanks! I couldn't use my digger to get into a vault, which upset me until I remembered priests have earthquake, which made it very easy to break in. Without artifacts being destructible, made this very easy for me.
