Missing help prompts on the top part of the screen.

Trying to get back after many years.

I noticed that I might be missing something.
From what I remember. In the older versions when you, for example, target some monster you got the full list of available actions on the top part of the screen.
Now to see command this list you need to press "?".

If it something that was changed in the new version, is there a way to return previous behavior?

These are not what you asked for but are some of the ways to besides '?' to learn what key invokes which action or to invoke the action without knowing the key:

1. Pressing return (unless you've set up a keymap to have it do something else) brings up a hierarchical menu with all the actions listed by broad categories ("Items", "Action commands", ....). You can select an entry from that menu to start that action, and the entry for an action will at its end have the key, in parentheses, that will invoke that action (for instance with "Drop an item (d)" the "(d)" says that you could press 'd' when the game is waiting for a command to drop an item).
2. If the front end supports mouse input (all except the DOS frontend do), you can right click on a location in the main window's map and get a context menu for things you could do with that location. That menu does not include options to target that location with a wand or rod or the activation of an equipped item.
3. When you bring up the inventory ('i') or quiver ("|"), selecting an item in the list will bring up a context menu for actions you could do with that item. To fire something with your equipped launcher using that approach, select the ammunition you want to fire and not the launcher.
