    Game Score

It's probably an old idea, but what about giving the player a score for the game?

You could give players points for various milestones (reaching a new dungeon level and killing uniques) and the higher the score multiplier for each milestone the higher the points.
The score multiplier could start at 1.0 and be decreased for each player turn and also a set amount each time you return to town or go up a staircase.

Each milestone has a certain amount of points associated with it so you calculate the points received by:

Points = (milestone points) * (score multiplier)

It would give a bit more reward for people who aim to minimise turn count and play ironman mode. It would also give a penalty for people who stair scum a lot or return to town after each level.

You could even give penalties to certain classes that are considered easier to win with.

Isn't there already a high-score list you can see on character death? Or was that removed?

It's there, but the algorithm is silly. If I recall correctly, you get points for depth (good), points for experience (that's alright), points for gold in hand (hmm...), and points for turns taken (oops).

If I were re-writing an Angband scoring algorithm from scratch, I'd probably do something like give 500,000 points for killing Morgoth, and up to 5,000 points per dungeon floor depending on how many turns it took to get past.
