    wine and deathmolds don't mix

so after a cup of wine or so I decided to continue adventuring with my 48 gnome mage. and I spot a deathmold 2 steps behind a door. No biggie, just a measly 975 xp at this point but free xp nonetheless. so i head down the corridor and open the door but I fumble and overstep right into the deathmold twice! :

The Death mold releases spores at you.
Your Small Metal Shield of Thorin (i) resists disenchantment! [yipee!]
The Death mold releases spores at you.
Your Mace 'Taratol' (a) was disenchanted! [Auuuughhhhh!!!]
The Death mold releases spores at you.
You feel your life slipping away! [Oh well...]
    You hit the Death mold.
    It was a good hit!
You miss the Death mold. <2x>
    You hit the Death mold.
The Death mold releases spores at you.
Your Elven Cloak of Protection (h) was disenchanted! [grrr...]
The Death mold releases spores at you.
Your Short Bow of Amras (b) was disenchanted! [Noooooo!]

And I didn't even get that xp back!
Plus I wasted a stack of 15 *Enchant Weapon* trying to re-enchant 'Taratol' with no success. Add injury to insult, I had swapped 'Thorin' over a shield of preservation (rDisenchant) while fighting black puddings earlier and forgotten to re-swap.

There are fates worse than death in angband as there is nothing more sinister than artifact disenchantment.

    -Don't drink and *band

Artifact disenchantment is royally infuriating. I would suggest removing it (artifacts cannot be disenchanted) but nothing should ever be invincible.
    Too bad, I guess.

I agree with your "nothing should ever be invincible" stance, and recommend that you try Nightmare mode in Hengband or Zangband. There, items have a chance of being disenchanted even with RDisenchant and you have a chance of being permanently stat-drained even with the appropriate Sustain.

Self interest aside, here's what i would suggest regarding artifact disenchantment:

Artifacts can be disenchanted if they fail their roll. however, unlike good/ego items they are still powerful relics of a time gone by. Scrolls of *Enchant Weapon* or *Enchant Armor* should be able to re-enchant them back to their original stats without the ridiculous penalty roll each try. It should read a special message such as 'The Long Sword Ringil has been restored to it's former glory!' or 'The long Sword Ringil Recalls it's Epic past!. Maybe even 'The Blade that was Broken shines again!'

Once it reaches it's original values the *Enchant* scrolls will work as normal (aka, almost completely useless). Note, standard scrolls of enchantment will not provide this benefit. This actually justifies saving these scrolls in the first place.

Just as Narsil was reforged to Anduril, disenchanted artifacts should be 'reforged' (by scrolls) within the confines of the game.

This may be difficult to implement but I feel it would make a lasting difference in gameplay as so much time is invested in acquiring these items.

I'd rather see no weapon/armor disenchantment at all, but no enchantment either. Let Calris remain -20 to hit. Let disenchantment attacks drain charges or mana.
