    Grargh

    Did two staggeringly stupid, careless things tonight. I could put my head through a wall, or post about it here. Opting for the latter.

    First, I somehow dropped my Elfstone while switching weapons. Obviously, a bad set of keystrokes. I didn't realize it until after I'd left the level. Poof.

    Then, after fighting my way through a pack of dragons, I found myself standing on an un-ID'd Ring of Speed. Again, somehow my fingers betrayed me and rather than casting Identify, I cast Teleport Level and sank through the floor, leaving it overhead.

    I might put my head through the wall anyway, actually.

    The RoSpeed is no great loss-at your depth you'll find another soon enoug. But dropping Elessar--that hurts!

      The inscription {!k!d!v} might help you in the future. If an item has that inscription, you will be asked for confirmation before destroying, dropping or throwing that item. I think {!*} will cause a request for confirmation before doing anything with that item.

      Unfortunately, I don't think that there's a way to request confirmation before casting a particular spell

        I believe placing a certain inscription on your boots will prevent you from going to another floor without authorization. Lemme find it:

        = Prevent going up/down =
        {^<}
        Verify before going up stairs.
        {^>}
        Inscribe boots to make confirm before going down stairs.
        This can also be useful on Charisma boosting items that you wear around town but don't want to take into the dungeon.
        {^>^r^z^m^p}
        Prevent leaving town with this item. Need to catch stairs, scrolls and rods of Recall, and Mage and Priest Word of Recall spells.
        I give credit to an FAQ i found by Jim Lyon. This probably won't help too much with the teleport level though. I'd suggest creating a macro to run the identify to save yourself time and prevent more spell errors. If you'd like that posted here, pls say so and I'll see what I can find.
        PS: Am I allowed to post a direct link to the macro guide? Anyway just search jim lyon angband macro faq in google and click on the Thangorodrim link to a text file. You should get the right thing.

          Cool - I didn't know about that one. It doesn't have to be your boots, btw - any wielded item will do.

          Am I allowed to post a direct link to the macro guide?
          I think that would be fine.

            Well there is no bad death if you learn something from it. I would say these mistakes, though painful, serve a purpose.

              So true. Death is a part of life. (In Angband, at least.)

                ouch, losing the Elfstone truly is a pity. Reading your loss made my recent run in with a deathmold seem somewhat more trivial.

                And, as tummychow suggested, do macro identify onto a function key as you'll save yourself a world of pain/mistakes. just macro m3f-a onto a function key ( the 3 is for the third magic book which is inscribed {@3!k!d!v} in my case ). This macro allows me to identify items on the ground, and it works on multiple ground items one by one.
