    Feature Request : Autosave

    Gah,

my competition char was doing unbelievably well, and I lost 2 levels of progress, artefacts and some pretty good stuff ( 2 scrolls of *acquirement* ).

Angband and all variants should have autosave , at least at level save. Technically I would almost autosave after defeating uniques, level gains and finding artefacts.

    Food for thought,
    T.

Really, why does autosave need to produce an in game message message. The reason I keep it at 500 or 1000 is precisely because I get tired of seeing the message. If it is included as an option, it should be on by default.

Which brings me to my next point. Angband is a perma-death game. Why is auto save even option. It should auto save after every turn, or 10 turns, or 100 turns without regret or remorse, and that's one less option on the option screen.

A crash with significant loss of progress is a character killer for me. A variant that does this to me twice is one that I won't play.

I thought it did autosave whenever you go up or down stairs, what version are you playing and on what operating system?

wait a minute, are you scumming saves? IE: dying and using a previously copied save to resurrect your character? That's totally up to you as a gameplay decision since the game can't stop you... but still not in the spirit of the game.

I am playing DajAngband, not save scumming as I was playing for the comp.
The save was ancient of this morning.. I played for 8 hours straight, most painful.

I think when you run through a long corridor, saving every step might be excessive, especially on laptops running on battery. But yes, I start to understand why I need to release the next Hellband sooner rather than later

I've lost progress on characters from crashes in either the game or my computer.

I think autosave should automatically be done after all the following actions:

            entering a new level
            wielding a new armor/item
            gaining a level
            discovering an artifact
            killing a unique
            increasing a stat

I'm pretty sure you won't lose any major progress on a game crash if you have those points saved. I got in the habit of saving the game on each level. (not save scumming, just using the save file.)

There is an auto save feature I believe with a configurable number of turns, which should suit your purposes.

It is useful mostly to prevent data loss due to corruption or crashing if you are having those issues.

There's an autosave feature? I don't remember that being anywhere....
I could have a use for the autosave if I could configure it. In addition, it would have to be some kind of fast save, like in an MS Office program (only saving changes) because that repetitive slowdown on my old comp would tick me off. Then leave full save to the ctrl-s command.

The game currently autosaves after level change. At least, it did at some point in 3.1.2, but I think that is in 3.1.1 as well.

Well, it autosaves after going up and down, but not when you use the priest spell "Alter Reality". I found that out the hard way last night! Boo-urns.

If you really want autosave on every move, you can use the angband movie replayer I wrote a while back. It needs some modification to work as an autosave, and it is highly vulnerable to scumming. But for not-quite-stable variants it would be a huge win: get both contnuous autosave AND guaranteed crash repro cases.
