    Ration of Detonation. Seriously? WTF?!

Okay, so I decided to play the nightlies. I'm on a mac. I downloaded the latest mac nightly from the site referred to by rephial (revision 1649, Sept. 2nd - a bit out of date). I went in the dungeon, killed some monsters, got to DLVL 2, and got hungry. So I ate a ration of food.

    Massive explosions rupture your body!
    You die.
    You have been heavily stunned.
You have been given a mortal wound.
    You are no longer hungry.
You have 5 rations of food (b).

    ...

"You are no longer hungry" seemed just to be a stab at my dignity. At first, I thought I had mistakenly eaten the Light Blue Mushroom, and that somehow, it was a Mushroom of Detonation. However, upon further investigation, I see I was "Killed by a potion of detonation."
I examine the ration of food in my pack:

This nutritious but fairly bland food is familiar to anyone contemplating long journeys.

When eaten, it inflicts 50d20 points of damage, severe cuts, and stunning.

    Nourishes for around 3000 turns.

    ...

So my question is: WTF?! Could someone please explain this? I dearly hope I am simply the butt of a cruel and hilarious joke. (Though I do admit: It was quite hilarious.)

I laughed out loud upon reading your post. I hope it's not a bug. It needs to stay. I'm just disappointed that I didn't think of it first.

    *** Randitems anyone ???

(By the way, after I threw one and it didn't work, I ate one to make sure the description wasn't just faulty. ...It wasn't.)
It just keeps getting better and better.

That's funny as hell, but I don't see it in the code. Try doing a clean build. (delete all .o files in src and subdirectories.)

I just tried a build and found a mistake in Makefile.inc -- there are references to nonexistent file randname.h in the dependencies list.

In any case, I wasn't able to reproduce it.

Without changing any files, and in a new game, the ration of food once again was lethally explosive. After deleting all of the .raw files in data, I tried again and it worked as normal. This is strange because I could've sworn I already deleted those files before starting this version.

However, I now regret that. I just realized: If rations of food had lethal explosive effects similar to those of Potions of Detonation, could it have worked as an extremely powerful throwing weapon (After all, it didn't specifically say it inflicted that damage "when ingested")?

        I'm going to try something...

EDIT: Never mind. I cannot reproduce that bug. What a shame...

Yes, it would have worked that way--~500 dam/throw! It would be a hell of an exploit, so long as you can keep stocked with ?Satisfy Hunger, etc.

And what if the shop ran out?

I know I would be happy to see a few slime molds for once!

Excellent. I'm not sure if this a good reason on the side of removing the raw files, or on the side of making sure they never disappear so this kind of thing can happen again.
takkaria whispers something about options. -more-

I just reproduced the bug again. I don't know how it happened. I had deleted the .raw files and started a game, and everything was normal. Today without changing anything but rebooting my computer, I examined my ration of food and - lo and behold - it was once again explosive.

Very, very unfortunately, it did not work as expected when thrown. It only took out a third or so of the health of a Grey Mushroom Patch. I suppose the only thing you could do with this bug is wait for a Green Glutton Ghost or Rot Jelly to eat your food, then watch massive explosions rupture its body.

(By the way, after I threw one and it didn't work, I ate one to make sure the description wasn't just faulty. ...It wasn't.)

That's how I thought it would work. Cleanup is ongoing, but item effects have been hardcoded for a long time, and flags generally affect the player and do not affect monsters.

Sorry about that - I'd updated the build machine to Snow Leopard and failed to notice it broke the nightly builds r1676 is up there now and new builds should be appearing regularly again.

                          What a great bug!
