Yup. Broken dagger + 2 attacks is about as good as it gets in the early game. Except for narsil.

And I do remember an early attempt at diving, wearing a Filthy rag (Resist Acid) down to 2500' or so.

I know it's not Vanilla, but I loved finding The Filthy Rag of Keri the Humble for the first time [ZAngband]. After that I've always been a little excited when I come across a filthy rag

Unfortunately, I've never seen a decent broken stick.

One of my very first games I found the shards of Narsil - couldn't have been deep, maybe 2000' or so. I was so excited I just sat and stared at the description for a good ten minutes.

That experience, more than anything else, may have been what got me hooked.

Hmm, I never did get the point of wine in the shops. But useless items on the dungeon floor, like skulls & skeletons do have a nice feel to it. No harm in having some flavour in the game. A dungeon is not a sterile operating theatre.

Furthermore with the auto-squelsh feature they are easily hidden from sight for (experienced) players.

I understand the reason for pricing ranged weapons so high, but I find it ridiculous that a sling costs more than 200 gold.

The idea about bones littering a level containing out of depth monsters is one of the best I've heard in a while!

I had another idea and wonder whether it would be difficult to implement it.

Could Lanterns and torches light the immediate area if lying on the floor?
It would be nice to enter partly lit rooms because in some corner is a campfire or a stack of torches.
One could also drop torches to lit a specific part of a hallway without the need of a light spell.

Currently when lanterns or torches aren't wielded it's assumed that they are not lit, which is why they don't lose turns of light when in the pack. At a glance, it seems like the additional bookkeeping, etc, required to make this work would not be worth it.

I could imagine a dungeon feature or floor type acting as a campfire but that sounds more like a variant to me.

Once there was a guide (Poet's guide) to make use of seemingly useless things like throwing various stuff, cloning a harmless monster to prevent a dangerous one to reach you, wearing teleportation items to escape dangerous situations or the still useful potion of salt water to get rid of poison.

Every time I play I keep a collection of junk items in my house.. Basically just to see how many I can get before I die/win.

It's alot harder now with less junk items. My current character is storing amulets of teleportation.

They're totally not junk! I keep random teleportation stuff around at earlier bits of the dungeon and wield them if a fight is looking like it's going to be hazardous.

Rings of teleportation (+2 speed) have totally changed my playing style!

Well yes, they definitely help... and I did use an amulet or ring of teleportation on my current character twice so far. (because of blind/confuse)

Thing is, there aren't as many less-than-ideal items to hoard just for funzies now so I chose that one
