    Signaling unknown kinds in shops?

I was just thinking that it would be interesting to be able to know which items available in shops one hasn't seen in the dungeon. I have really enjoyed using the itemlist subwindow to find new kinds in the dungeon (the ones that show up in red) and I was thinking that it would be nice to have a similar thing in shops somehow. This way, I wouldn't get excited about seeing unknown potion flavors later in the game only to find a potion of boldness or something that I just never bothered to buy.

What do people think? Potentially useful? Superfluous? How would you signal it in the interface? I could imagine changing the color of the letter next to the item, or something like that.

For some reason I thought this had been implemented... maybe implemented and taken away - or more likely it was just in Eddieband. I'm guessing Daj has it as well. The way it worked was it was that unaware flavors in shops were inscribed {unaware}. It's useful for diving purposes, as well as convenience as you describe. So I guess the code is there. It does clutter things up a bit though. A different font would be cool.. I don't know how anything about the coding practicalities.

Some version I got through svn once had them marked {unknown}, but that went away in more recent versions. I also find it very useful to have unaware flavors marked in the squelch menus. When I implemented this initially, years ago, I used a half-tone in the shops. I think marking (unaware) is better, because it is obvious without requiring the user to read a manual to realize there is something going on.

Playing Z+ (with DVG graphics) handles this by showing pics of ID'd items in shops, as well as their name. Un-ID'd items display as blanks (or ASCII, I can't remember). It's a useful feature. I frequently buy un-ID'd stuff simply to learn the flavor (then sell it right back again).

I like this way of handling it... it seems more compact than the {unknown} pseudo-inscription.

But how does that work for ASCII players?

I liked it in Eddieband, but I don't think it ever made it into svn. I'd like to see it though - IMO it's a no-brainer.

I understood the "graphic" to be a grey colored "/" or whatever. I'm primarily a curses player, which is why I was worried about screen space. It sounds like Takkaria is interested in using {unaware} or {unknown} though.
