Confused about multiple character on Linux

While its easy in Windows, I don't understand how I can play multiple characters at once on Linux. I have tried some of the command line options and they didn't behave the way I though they would. Does anyone have any suggestions or help they could offer?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Hmm, I prefer to keep all my characters in one savefile (so they can share monster memory, squelch settings, options, etc.) but if you prefer to play several characters at a time, it looks like you need to use the -u command-line option, like so:
    angband -uExplorington
    angband -uHeronicus
    angband -uDudley
Is that not working for you? If not, perhaps you could work around it by making a script to rename your savefiles for you...

edit: oh, also, the GTK port behaves a bit like the Windows port in that you can use a menu to load a savefile...

I was afraid of the -u option because I couldn't get it to load my current character. I thought I might lose him. I tried it anyways. I can now get a new character with the -u option and my current character with no -u option. I'll have to look around and see what the save file is with no -u.

      Thanks!

That command gets my default save file apparently. It uses my Linux user name. Thanks again for the help.

          You gotta love self quotes...

Anyway, to clarify for others; default savefile should be {priv}.{usr} - so on my system I get:

          {angband}/lib/save/1000.Dave

Would be nice If a new characer could get MM imported without having to manually make a copy of the savefile, load game & quit it, then start up a new char; anyone got a quick hack I can can use from within a script?

Do you mean a macro for Magic Missile? You can save macros and other preferences (options, colours etc. etc.) to files other than that specific character's pref file (<charname>.prf). If you save them to user.prf, they will get loaded with every game. If you save them to <race>.prf (as in hobbit.prf, human.prf etc.) they will get loaded for every character of that race. I've never understood this, because I can't think of any race-specific settings I would want, but the principle is interesting: if there was the same functionality for <class>.prf, this would be really helpful.

You can also create your own pref file and save them there, and manually load it up when you want it (then save it for that char so you don't need to do it again).
