So my latest ranger is hovering around 2750' and just managed to get a mess of good drops. My guess is that I should be dropping down to 3500' or deeper, but I'm not sure what I need to be looking for other than speed items. The only thing I'm worried about is the lack of rNexus, but I'm still thrilled at being able to stand up to things that have historically been death sentences.

I'm keeping the cap of Thranduil as a telepathy swap - the Crown of Gondor just seems too good to pass up.

Telepathy is not suitable as a swap. It saves you when you get careless and would not have noticed your doom approaching. That only works if you are wielding it before you know you need it.

The Crown of Gondor does make a fantastic swap for telepathy, though.

I have never used telepathy as a swap; it seems necessary at all times, even (especially) when you are feeling safe. I'd rather sacrifice a clutch resist for Telepathy.

That's not what I meant. Swap in Gondor when you're about to start a big fight. Use ESP while walking around and exploring.

I think y'all saved @'s life with that advice. I'd been planning on doing it backwards: wearing the crown, relying on detect monster, and swapping in telepathy to manage more tactical situations.

I get telepathy by scumming level 20 until I get Thranduil. I consider it essential. Telepathy will get you speed. I scummed until I got Feanor too, see ladder for LCC3...
