What is the easiest way to kill this blasted Q for a ranger? I tried hitting him from around a corner with ball spells and the like, but they do nothing to him. I can't even get within his site without him summoning the whole underworld to descend upon me. I know I don't NEED to kill him and can very easily run away or avoid him, but I would rather the big 'M' not summon him once I set up that encounter.

By far the easiest way to is get him in a hockey stick. If you get lucky and he spawns next to a wall, you can dig your way to an exploited Q:
Code:########### ###@XXXXXX# ###X#####X# ..Q..####X# .....####X# .........@. .....######

Personally I reckon he's WAY more trouble than he's worth. Even if Morgy summons him, it's a single turn of -tOther and he's out of the picture for the rest of the fight (assuming you don't teleport yourself)."Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

I've never killed this guy without using a hockey stick situation. I used to feel guilty about doing that, but then I realized the monsters use hockey sticks on me so it's fair.A(3.1.0b) CWS "Fyren_V" NEW L:50 DL:127 A++ R+++ Sp+ w:The Great Axe of Eonwe

Get him in a location with restricted LOS (a pillar room or a destroyed area), and you can just go in and wallop him. If he summons nasties, phase away and teleport them. Eventually he'll summon something like weak hounds or trolls, and then he's dead. (Unlike the lesser Q's, he doesn't have a blink spell.)Comment

Actually I take back that I have never killed him without the hockey stick. I found him in a cell in the large Cells vault all alone. Way too easy. He never teleported away (not sure if he can).A(3.1.0b) CWS "Fyren_V" NEW L:50 DL:127 A++ R+++ Sp+ w:The Great Axe of Eonwe

the rule for targeting enemies (unless it has changed) goes like this...
(I will be using numbers to help with the explanation. The numbers up top represent the distance the monster is from the wall, and the distance you must be from it. 0 is the wall you are using to affect the monster's line of sight.)
Example 1:
Code:10 Q####### ..@..... .01
Example 2:
Code:210 Q.######## ....@.... ..012
Example 3:
Code:6543210 Q.....############ ............@.... ......0123456
Example 4:
This can also work vertically, as can be seen by Marble Dice's post

Apologies for the thread necro, but as I found this thread looking for info on Qlzqqlzuup, I thought I'd post an update relative to how this seems to work in 4.2.3
The LOS trick above sometimes works, and sometimes doesn't. I found him in a room where he was two steps away from a wall and so tried the tunneling trick carefully approaching from one of two possible options. Neither worked. Counting the first block of wall as 0, mr. Q was at 3, so I tried positioning myself at -3 as shown below. Didn't work - couldn't see/target him, and if I stepped closer then both he and I could see each other and the summoning mayhem began. I ended up TOing him, and as luck would have it found him closer to a wall later on. I gave it another go, and sure enough, it worked! I wish I understood why it didn't work in one case and did in another, but I'd say this - if you try it and can't target him from the safe square, don't advance unless the intent is just to TO him and hope for a better arrangement.

In the above image, imagine a diagonal starting at Q and going up and right. Where it hits the rock, you have to dig out; and 1 tile north of that spot, you are not in Q's LoS but can attack Q.
Its basic hockey stick mechanic, used in angband since frog knows.Comment

Yes. Your tunnels were too close for the distance. The basic shape is the knight's move, from @ (in diagram 2) to (5,1), and from there, follow the diagonal to Q.
A few quirks:
Activating a LoS skill (like a staff of dispel evil) from @'s spot in diag 2 will affect (5,1), but not the squares further down the diagonal.
*-target will pick up Q (if its is visible to @, i.e. displayed on the map) in vanilla, but not in ToME where you have to manually move the cursor. Once manually targeted you can fire ammo/spells as normal. Not sure how other variants work.
More advanced hockey stick tactics involve overshooting the corner at odd angles (less than 45 °) to hit squares in the lee of the corner that would be blocked if targeted directly.Comment
