How's about making them evil so the poor old warriors know where they're coming from occasionally?

I'd prefer adding a rare staff or something which detects all monsters (not just evil ones).

That's a matter of practice. Also, if you think Warriors are bad, try playing a Priest!

(a) Carry flashlights (aka Rods of Light) and light switches (aka Rods of Illumination) to illuminate hallways and rooms.

(b) Warriors have a lot of HP. Teleport away before undetected hounds kill you.
