Feelings simply indicate on scale of 1 to 10 how "interesting" a level is, with 1 being the most interesting. Technically 1 isn't necessarily more "interesting" than 2, it just means certain conditions were met (an artifact or a nest/pit/vault), and feeling 1 is only available when playing without preserve mode.
1 You feel there is something special here...
2 You have a superb feeling about this level.
3 You have an excellent feeling...
4 You have a very good feeling...
5 You have a good feeling...
6 You feel a little lucky.
7 You are unsure about this place.
8 This place seems reasonably safe.
9 This seems a quiet, peaceful place.
10 This place looks uninteresting.
If you didn't spend enough time on the previous level before arriving on the level in question, you won't know what the feeling is and will instead get "Looks like any other level."
Things which the game may consider intersting are nests, pits, vaults, out-of-depth monsters and uniques, dragonscale armor, rings of speed, certain high level amulets (magi, devotion, etc), out-of-depth objects, ego items, artifacts, and probably some other stuff I don't know about.
