    [V] Advice for Morgoth

    Hi all,

I've got a clvl 50 Half-Elf Rogue that I think is doing pretty well (see on ladder, http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=8516)

I've never got this far, now thinking about taking on Morgoth, I'm looking for advice to see if anything is missing from my kit... do I need to collect some more scrolls of banishment or *destruction* ?

    Cheers!

That character is way overpowered, except as you say for a source of banishment.
    Some things you might want:

Rods of Teleport Other. (Slightly lower fail rate than spell.)
?Teleport scrolls, but you probably have killed all the uniques, so this is unlikely to be necessary.

Make sure to do full buffing in town prior to going down. (Berserk, Hero, Chant/Blees)
Carry lots of ?Phase door. You can't afford failures when M summons. (His earthquakes will break up LOS, so long as you fight away from any big rooms--like in the absolute corner of the dungeon.)

Otherwise, you are good to go.

        Successful! (http://angband.oook.cz/ladder-show.php?id=8516)
        First Win!
I have to confess that I cheated death once... at clvl48 I got killed by a double chaos breath from a Jabberwrock. I had a recent back-up save because I had been copying savefiles between computers by email.
        Other than that, no back-ups.

        My notes:
-My character was way overpowered - too easy. I Meleed him with Deathwreaker and +45 speed.
-Morgoth summoned a few uniques I hadn't seen before, it was easy to teleport them away and clear them out after
-I didn't realize *destruction* would also make Morgoth disappear! I had to climb back up to 4950ft and back down to face him again...
-My huge stash of healing potions (I used only !healing throughout the game almost entirely, saving !*healing* and !Life for the last battle) were more than enough
-I only saw one or two mana storms from Morgoth, both ~600HP. I just made sure to always stay above 600HP when facing him
-The greater undead summons were hardly a problem unless a lot of black W's got stacked up in my line of sight and started breathing nether
-I mainly handled excessive summoning by ?Phase Door and the stair creation spell - since Morgoth is faster than his minions, I'd get a few turns to bash him, safe behind doors and earthquake debris. When the underlings caught up, I'd phase door again. This also gave me time to heal and drink !Mana.
-His most damaging attack was making the ceiling fall on me, I think this did about ~700HP once
-The only really troublesome summoning he did was ancient dragons, since I didn't have RSound or RShards covered. That was the one and only banishment that I did.
        -Nice crown and hammer

I think I'll try a high-elf mage next, or maybe a troll priest... anyone had good luck with priests?

Advice for Morgoth: Don't put all the strong monsters at the bottom of the dungeon, you moron! Just stick some Great Wyrms on level 1, or better yet in the town, and you won't have to worry about adventurers ever again.

Heh, that was my first thought on reading the thread title too.

Tricky adventurers still can evade them though. A lot of Shrieker Mushroom Patches and Hunting Hawkes or something will also help!

Level one should look like this:

Replace those shrieker mushrooms with Crebains. And Q's don't do much good at level 1. Summoning a bunch of blue yeeks isn't going to help much.

Would be better? Obviously those are Druj not Skeleton Humans...

In fact I think even a *WINNER* would struggle to surive that level...

Providing he got the first move and had a means of *destruction*, he would likely survive unless by some remote chance enough drujs had LOS after the quake to kill him on the following turn.

Morgoth will never level-up killing off newb adventurers. He want you to become powerful before you die. He also wants the tactile pleasure of killing you with his own two hands. After all, it's very boring down on DL100 (most of the time).

It'd be easier for him to summon and kill dragons, really.
