Noe, just use another scroll of recall up on the surface, and it'll take you back down to the lowest depth you've been to. ^_^

Yep, Word of Recall. After your initial dive, you'll want to carry at least 2...one to tp back to the dungeon and one to tp you back to town. I like to carry a few extra...nothing sucks more that being 50 floors down and having your only ?WoR destroyed by hounds or something.

Yes, tis happened to me a couple times. One such instance ((exactly duplicate of the example)) would be my thread "1400' Down and No Recall!!" which explains the horrors of painstakingly clawing your way back up like 308 floors. =]

I've been in that boat a couple of times. I was a bit further along, however, and I just kept going until I found one in the dungeon. However, that can be tough to do early on like in the situation you were in as they aren't all that plentiful.

Yeah, even though I ((think)) I had the Phial, I was afraid of running out of food, or having to dive too far to find one and things getting too tough and dying... so yeah. =\

I was looking for a newb thread to resurrect, and surprisingly couldn't find one. I thought this thread came close enough for this question.

Is it possible to Phase or Teleport into a vault, that is, a vault with permanent walls? I know that there is always a way in, but without a digger my options are limited. Based on my experience, I'd guess the answer is no. I just wanted to know for sure.

Correct. Phase and teleport always land you outside vaults - so you can phase from the centre of a big vault, and still land outside.

On the bright side, if you don't have a digger or stone to mud or enough strength to get in, not being able to get in will probably save your life.

I'm not a fool, though many may disagree. I had ESP and was far shy of the DL's I should have been exploring when I stumbled on this one, around DL20 IIRC. I cleared the entire rest of the level, looking for a digger, but never found one. There wasn't a monster in that vault that I couldn't handle, if I could only get in. After 1000's of turns of attempted tunneling I gave up on it and grudgingly left the level.

Fair enough. I had an O character recently where I found a vault, had no way in, thought "well, it was probably a bad idea anyway", then found -StM in the next room, tunnelled in and was killed.

Come to think of it, it's not really surprising I win so rarely.

Could you get a monster to teleport you in or a nexus attack perhaps (I admit the odds are very low but I know the same restrictions do not apply when you are not the originator of the teleport in some variants at least).

yes. Blink dogs are actually pretty effective for this.

I was once in that situation when I found an Umber Hulk that was a little bit slower than me. We danced around a square-shaped lesser vault for awhile until I was far enough ahead of him that he decided the shortest distance between two points was a straight line. That was fun.
