Eddies point about magical fur reminds me of an old idea.

    (i) Let's assume that most monsters that have a base attack also have the same base resistance (in their fur, scales, skin or whatever).

(ii) Using the "you found it in the corspe of a..." idea from other variants, we could...

(iii) Give to a char a base resistance if it has killed enough monsters that have that base attack.

In other words, if you kill enough green dragons, you eventually gain resPoison as an intrinsic (non-kit related) attribute (by 'consuming' their resistance).

    Problems:

    (a) low level breeders which are easy to kill (louse farming).

    (b) it should only be able to work if the char is 'brave' enough to 'go for it'.

    (c) high resists. In-scope or out?

    (d) hounds / dragons which multi-breath attacks

I don't know my variants well enough to know if this has been done before, so apols in advance if so.

History of this thought: playing NPP kobolds because poison killed me so often that I *had* to find a way to get res_pois early. I wanted another way to get res_pois from some findable (non-weapon) item <1500'

I agree mostly that "Resistances are magic. Please leave it that way.", but some of the race attributes can bypass the need for resistance to be magical.

If I'm understanding this right, you mean for players to hunt large quantities of a single monster type to gain a given resistance. That system sounds like it would reward scummy and boring play.

Nethack has that kind of thing in that poisoning (or fiery or whatever) monsters have a chance to drop a corpse, which when eaten has a chance to give you intrinsic resistance. (Which basically amounts to what you propose.) I think ToME has a touch of this as well, but the resists are temporary.

Yep, that's what I'm suggesting (well single-monster-type, not necc single-monster).

re: "That system sounds like it would reward scummy and boring play"

Indeed it could lead to "scummy play", just like stair-scumming, store-scumming, death-quasit-farming, wyrm-farming, and all those other 'tricks' that people with particular playstyles choose to use.

My point is: Some things are hard to come-by (eg: good source of res_pois <1500) if one plays a certain way. For some players, it's less-boring to kill lots of green-dragons than it is to dive to native =poison depth or hope for a nice res_pois ego to eventually drop.

There are times when I would have preferrered to hunt-&-kill many small green d's rather than dive to depths where res_pois is common.

I'm only advocating an unenforced playstyle choice. It's there if you want it.

I guess that depends on whether you're a 'task-driven' or 'strategy-driven' type of player.
