    Morgoth's Mana Storm

So I was fighting M today, and he takes me down to 344 HP. No other monsters are around and I am faster than him, so I quaff !Healing for 644HP.

M casts Mana Storm, I die with -2 HP.

I have read in numerous places that Mana Storm does 600HP, so what gives?

This is in NPP 4.2, but I didn't think that was changed.

Any tips for making sense of the source? I am looking at melee1.c, but not having a lot of luck figuring it out.

I've only beaten Morgoth once, but my memory is that Morgoth's mana storm does "around 600 HP" of damage, not 600 exactly. In your case he did 646 HP of damage. This doesn't seem way more than I remember.

M in NPP is more dangerous than other variants. He occasionally does up to 700hp damage with mana storm and plasma bolt. In most variants he rarely does more than 600hp damage.

In V it is 500 + 10d10, which is a between 500 and 600. In NPP average damage is 600, and then there's variation about that.

Alright, so how much variation - ie how many hp do you need to actually be safe?

            100, I think - certainly no more.
