    befuddled by level feelings

Could someone explain the object part of level feelings to me?

I got a level feeling of 7-9 at DL 22.

There was a pit of minor p's, acolytes and priests and paladins.

There was a vault, called "Interlock" in vault.txt, with some annoying monsters.

I figured I should clear the vault, because, you know, x-9.

I pretty much cleared the level, mapped it all casting dObj as I did so, and as far as items on the floor, all I noticed were a paltry 3 ego items:

    a Set of Gauntlets of Power (+5,+1) [3,+7] <+3>
    sling of accuracy +15+8
    an everburning lantern
    2 !restore_mana
    a sip of miruvor
    a Dagger (1d4) (+0,+0)

There was a chest in the vault, but all it contained were good arrows.

Now, I do not expect that the object code evaluation is smart enough to realize the dagger was one of the 2 most useful items on the level, but I include it just in case.

Ibun dropped an elfstone, and Ulfast dropped a phial, but I thought those don't count toward the object part of level feelings. Has this changed? If they picked up the items and later dropped them, would the description say "from a vault" or "dropped by"? Is this the source of my confusion?

I don't remember killing any monsters that destroy items or kill other monsters, but I suppose it is possible. There were some elemental bats, but I didn't notice any messages about them destroying anything on the ground.

A previous level with DSM and other goodies might have been a 7.

    Drops do not count.

    Chests do not count.

What very very likely happened is that there was a potion of Exp or Aug and something picked it up off the ground. There's a cutpurse out there with 50,000 gold worth of drop.

OR, maybe an elemental or a xorn crushed something. Wrath Of God maybe?

The gauntlets are 13 levels out of depth so are certainly worth a 5lf. I sure don't understand how it got to 9.

OK. You jogged my memory and the explanation of my befuddlement is that I am clueless.

I quaffed an unided potion of experience off the floor far away from the vault. Popped me from CL 22 to CL 30. You'd think that would have made an impression on me, but it didn't. I hardly ever pay attention to experience. It never occurred to me that that meant I wouldn't need to clear the vault. I wonder if that improved my melee by as much as the average dagger. Probably not.

        Thank you!

The gauntlets are a worthy fìnd, despite the low damage bonus.

For sure, most useful item on the floor on the level. Probably I will also get more use out of it than the pendant or the phial, but that depends on unknown runes they have and the fact I already found a star.
