    Average thrown damage?

Vanilla 4.2.3-199-(etc). Info about a Spear of Slay Evil (1d6) (+7, +13) says average thrown damage to be 200 vs. evil creatures but it almost always scores closer to 300....why the discrepancy? I'm playing a HE clev 32 rogue. It seems the average is about 300, I've seen damage ranging from 250 to 350.

The average thrown damage is like the "vs. others" damage shown for melee attacks: it assumes any slays or brands do not have an effect. The slay evil would add roughly 40 points of damage if the damage numbers you are reporting were for evil creatures..

There are some bugs that were fixed after 4.2.4 for how the shown damage factors in critical hits. If you are using the "To-damage is a percentage of dice" option (0- style damage calculations), those bugs have a more noticeable impact: they cause the shown damage for thrown weapons to be smaller than it should have been. Without that option, the impact of those fixes should be small for this case.

That doesn't make sense, as it specifically called out "against evil creatures": and gives a larger value (about 2x larger) than then "vs. others", yet the damage I see in game is far higher than what the information shows. I don't even know about the option you mention so I'm sure I'm not using it.

Sorry about that, I'm not sure what I was thinking. The O-combat option is the last option in the birth options.

I'm not sure this question is resolved? I continue to see huge differences between stated average damage and observed average damage for branded throwing weapons, at least specifically for the branded damage section.

A proposed change to fix the incorrect thrown damage shown is here, https://github.com/angband/angband/pull/5701 . The bug is most noticeable for slay animal, slay evil, and the weak elemental brands: multiply the damage shown without the change by 1.5 to roughly get what should be shown for those. For brands and slays with a 3x multiplier, multiply the damage shown without the change by 1.33 to get what should be shown. For slays with a 5x multiplier, multiply the damage shown without the change by 1.2 to get what should be shown.

This makes sense, and seems to roughly match my anecdotal observation. Thanks!
