Does Armor Class protect against magical/special attacks?

Are there any attacks other than the usual melee and conventional missile attacks which are less likely to deal damage with a very high AC (Armor Class)?

I have a mage who can cast the Shield spell (from the Resistances of Scarabtarices book), temporarily giving a very high AC. Are these useful against storm giants hurling boulders, gold dragon stunning sound, or other monster breath attacks, or other magical attacks etc.? (I looked on the web but was not able to find any such info.)

Unless something has changed it newer versions, your AC protects you only from melee attacks, making you harder to hit and offering some damage reduction.

Not only that, but if melee attacks have a special component like titans confusion then they dont have to overcome targets AC.

IIRC, attacks with special component still check your AC to confirm hit or miss, but their damage isn't reduced

Thanks for the info! It will save me from consuming precious mana casting an unnecessary Shield spell while I pummel the monsters from afar with my "xxx Bolt" spells.
