Discovered this by accident while casing out a large vault: when using 'x' for examine and browsing between 'interesting' squares (monsters, items, doorways) with the movement keys, certain "granite wall" '#' tiles count as 'interesting' -- that is, the cursor will stop on them. These are secret doors.
