4.2.3: Extreme out of depth unique. Hmm

So my level 29 rogue just detected Ungoliant the Unlight in a vault at 1850'. It's natural depth is 3750'. Seems a bit extreme... almost bug-level extreme. Thoughts?

It is working as intended. Keyword here is "in a vault" - you can safely ignore it and leave the level if you are worried. You can teleport her away, with more or less risk depending on the exact circumstances, or, being a rogue, you could try stealing from her Darkesty (not recommended).

If memory serves, monsters in vaults can be up to 2000' out of depth so she is within that parameter.

Indeed, vault.txt says that a monster 40 levels out of depth is possible. But if you're adventurous, the treasure they're sitting on could be as much as 20 levels OOD.

I think my last winner encountered Huan Wolf hound of the Valar at around level 40. He's a level 80+ Unique. The level had a 9 (murderous) feeling. I TO-ed him until I cleaned out everything on the level including a big vault.

Then I decided to take a shot at him (the character had good equipment and speed). One light or dark breath into the fight I realized the foolishness and TO-ed him again and left :-)

That dog is tough even when you're maxed out. It was a bold move.

You've got to know when to hold, you've got to know when to fold, know when to walk away and when to run.... That was a time to run

Ungoliant is DL 7750, 38 levels beyond your current depth. That is very close to the maximum possible difference of 40.

Ultimately, he ran and survived and caught up with him way down the dungeon with massive speed and HP.

And yes I play a lot of poker!!

4.2.3 definitely seems to generate more extreme out of depth monsters than earlier versions.

Encountered Mouth of Sauron (native 65) on DL28 so nearly 40 level difference. However he was NOT in a vault and the feeling was 9-4 so and don't believe there was a vault anywhere on the level. Also ran into the Phoenix on DL28 but that was 9-9 level.

Latest game, 9-8 feeling on I think level 29. Saw a vault with Great Hell Wyrm and a death drake inside.
While planning how to approach, walked into gravity hounds and died...

Strangely enough, in my last two games the Phoenix has appeared at extreme OOD. One time he killed me, the second I lured him out of a vault and managed to raid it. It was scary because I knew one breath could kill my character

Yeah, tried the same tactic on 9-9 level, I though I was OK with fire immunity and TO.
"The Phoenix breathes light. You die."

Sounds like another reason in the long list of "I should always play as a high elf"

There isn't a strong difference between 4.2.1 and 4.2.3 for the number of deadly monsters (more than 10 levels out-of-depth) reported by the statistics debugging command (these numbers are for 1000 clearing simulations each; then summing the reported numbers for blocks of 5 levels):

                          Code:
Number of deadly monsters per block of 5 levels

There were changes to the tunneling in 4.2.3 so the vaults with doors or other small entrances on their edges (like the "Cross" lesser vault in this screen shot or the "Cracks of Doom" greater vault in this screen shot) are more likely to be connected to the rest of the dungeon. That would make it easier for the residents of those vaults to get out once they wake up.
