Not sure how this death happened

I had ~400 HP and the Balrog of Moria was injured
And I most definitely resisted fire....

    -399?

    Seems a bit much

Doesn't the balrog of Moria breathe fire for 1600?

I'd always double resist anything that high and potions of resist fire are plentiful

There is something unusual going on - he has 3000 max HP, so should breath fire for max 1000, which would be 333 single resisted.

I don't suppose you still have the savefile, do you? If you do, and haven't started another character with it, could you attach it and your randart file to this thread (you'll have to zip them).

My guess would be a cursed item with fire vulnerability.

Most likely this bug, fixed shortly after 4.2.1 was released?

Aha, thank you! I thought it might be something to do with the vElec, but forgot about that bug. No need for a savefile after all.

Lucky someone knows something about the game...

                My monster memory says 1000

I usually don't mess with Balrogs at all unless I have fire immunity.
But I just wanted to play with the taunt spell.

It did not work so good.

It's mathematically impossible to get less than -333 HP vs Balrog of Moria with single resistance and no curse of winter's chill.

Can't he also generate lava from fire breath? My guess is that you stepped on the lava tile and got incinerated.

Except there are no messages to that effect, and in any case it doesn't do nearly 399 damage

The only explanation is that he took full fire damage (no resistance), but I can't see why that should be.

I've been informed there's a bug... (related to a different cursed item I was wearing - lightning vulnerability)

Yes, that's correct - I'll explain in full as there seems to still be some confusion.

There was a bug in 4.2.1 where when a worn item had a vulnerability to an element, the equipment slot number of the item was recorded instead of the element. So in this case, a vulnerability to electricity (element 1) was found on the right hand ring (equipment slot 2), which the bug translated into a vulnerability to fire (element 2). The resistance calculation says that single resistance + vulnerability = no resistance, so the fire breath (of a bit under 800) was taken at full strength.

Note that without the bug a fire breath would have done about 230, so not fatal; and an electricity breath of similar strength would have done nothing, because immunity + vulnerability = immunity.

On the upside, 4.2.2 has much better Blackguard, and a few other spell tweaks. The big downside to 4.2 is balrogs. There are about a million on every level after DL 95. And they bore through rock from the other side of the dungeon.
