    Quick noob question

First post, probably a dumb question.

I have played zangband for years, and just tried out ToME for the first time. I am playing v223 because i had the files already and the links for the newer versions seem to be dead.

Anyway, my question relates to the NPCs walking around asking for help (i.e. Melinda Proudfoot). What's the command to talk to these guys? Can't find anything in the list of standard angband commands.

    thanks!

    IIRC it's 'y', but I'm probably wrong
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.

Hmm...'y' does not seem to work unless I am using it incorrectly.

I strolled past Maggot until i got the help dialogue and hit 'y'. No go.

      Thanks, though.

Now i've got Maggot's mushrooms but how to give them to him?

When i speak to him with all 10 mushrooms in my inventory, he tells me i still need the 10 mushrooms?

            Give is 'y' (lowercase).

EDIT: Actually, it's pretty silly... there are very few monsters that respond to either 'y' or 'Y'.

It's like the use of Lua in the Thieves Quest and practically nowhere else -- a feature that got added and then was never really capitalized on because it wasn't a core part of the game design.

Thank you. I figured out the Y vs y thing.

Now I am experiencing other strange things that are bugging me. Most of my skill points are in melee weaponry. I've been using a whip of westernesse for a while now, which i assume is a hafted weapon. I just found my first artifact (the Battle Axe 'Lotharang'). However, when i wield this weapon, the '@" cursor showing my location vanishes. Any ideas why? Can't find anything in the FAQ.

Does it give you invisibility? Can you see invisible?

Doh! Thanks again! You'd think after playing angband for years something as obvious as see-invis would have occurred to me. I was wearing Smeagol's ring and the whip had see-invis on it.

Tome has a lot of new things that are obviously distracting me from thinking clearly.

Another thing that's bugging me is the location of other dungeons. I see from the character dumps that by my level (25) others have recall depths for the orc cave and the old forest and other dungeons. I have walked all over the wilderness and can't find any others. I currently have entrances for the barrow downs, the wight quest right next to it, and the maze. Can't find anything else. I am guessing maybe something triggers these, but have no idea what. I've spoken to all the NPCs i have come across.

                    Thanks again for the help!

Hit < while in the town to access the large-scale wilderness map. Other dungeons will show up as purple > on this view. The Orc Cave is north of Bree; Mirkwood is the next "main line" dungeon, but it's on the other side of the mountains (head south along the mountains to get around them; you can't actually go through Moria).

Thank you for the tip about the extended map. I found Moria, the Old Forest and the Orc Cave using it.

Sorry for hijacking but on average how many players are online at the same time and does this encourage cooperative play?

You're talking about TomeNET, not ToME. Usually, there are around 10 people online at various times, but most of them play solo. However, with the new party system, you're strongly encouraged to play in a party. Just be careful if you try to kill Morgoth in a party: he becomes stronger with each extra member.
