850 depth, found stairs * 2 for 950. But got an art to pick up.

Not finding much stat potions, particularly no con. That one will be a near necessity! Almost to the point where he can ninja kick everything in sight - another 5k to 7k XP should put him there. Master hunter boots dropped from cat assassin - that will help.

Lacking fear res which hurts. Had to flee horrors while afraid, then angrist them to give them an "understand me". I switch to deathblade against low armor/high evade (it's +2).

Note about subtelty which dawned on me earlier. It works for all attacks, while 2 HD only regular, flank, and con ret. That makes sub better hands down, so I went with that. Cruel blow is icing.

Once I get his " normal" melee into the high 20's (low slay bonus), it's throne room time. Well, and a pot of con and fear res. Though I don't think anything there causes it? Oh, maybe those vastly overpowered horrors have it (100d4 health????). It does. Though only 11 evade so I can easily confuse it.

    I expect to drop morgoth within 15 rounds . . .

I just opened a door and got over 1000 XP lol. This ought to be fun . . .

Well I assassinated or owned everything easily, then came the great cold drake. He was hard. The initial 8! assassinate took off 1 *. Pathetic! He did go down with a pot of quickness. But took some effort. Got fear res now.

And what lame brain decided we needed CHASMS????? Flavor, sure. But, it's to the point where I might be forced to spend 2k XP for leaping. I don't like being forced to have an ability. Especially one with ridiculously limited utility. Now, if leaping also could be used to attack, that has possibilities!

Are you using 2-weapon fighting? I was under the assumption that subtlety didn't work with that, if I'm wrong there is definitely a build I'd like to try

For subtlety your offhand needs to be empty.

As psi said. Desperate for a pot of con - no way I'm doing him without!

                  OK throne room.

Started with my usual. Quaff all 5 pots (str/Dex/con/gra/qui). SoS. Executed the vampire lord before the fun started. I didn't need that aggravation. Queen of vamps dropped in 2 rounds early. Trolls all 1 or 2 shotted once slay hit 10+. No big deal. Unrelenting horrors are the most overpowered enemy in the game, hands down. 100d4 health has to be a typo. Angrist plus 30 slaying will kill them, but takes Time.

Cruel blow is sick!! Kept them horrors from doing their spells. Gothmog down in 4 rounds. He made me heal once. Had him, a horror, and big V. V never had a prayer. Confused all 20+ rounds. I had to keep killing chaff. Couldn't keep sos high enough to fast kill him. Throne room definitely a little harder (not enough!!!). V earthquaked twice, made me heal twice (once with 3 HP!). Closest call ever. Think he got a crit in.

Angrist, 2 dam rings. Sos max was about +30 or so. Ideally would have got about 10k more xp to pump song to 20. It was at 15 base 23 total.

Big V needs more than 25 will - the uniques I killed on 950 were harder! Course I had to keep dealing with "private patches of darkness" on that depth. Hate gwathrauko with an absolute passion. I mean, even +4 light AND keen senses isn't always enough to see them!!!! I considered getting song of trees but that probably wouldn't be enough either. To me, darkness is a little too strong to overcome! So anyway, big V died in near record time (for me).

                  Turn 5,637. 58,428 XP.

I would give him like 35 or even 40 will, or better, make him resistant (not immune!!), to critical hits. Well, crits need to be reduced slightly anyway, I think. As I posted elsewhere. That would help too.

Cruel blow probably should be changed to where it's not quite as good. It works a little too often, to me. Maybe crit level * 3 instead of 4???

If I bother to escape, this likely would be #1 ladder. I won't though - I already have set the bar too high I think.

So, I'll do a quick run of my secret. Zone of control + flanking. Keep making enemies move to get the free attack. Add opportunist next (by way of follow through). Those will let you drop easily to 500-600. Sos at the start. Lore keeper after flanking, it's free XP because of IDing everything. Pays for itself. ZoC, flanking, and lore master get your melee, evade, and perception up. Dodge is a must too, once you get to East archers or cat territory. Moving is the key though. Most enemies don't attack sane turn as a move. And, you get a free shot. After those, boost song some, add subtlety, cruel blow, rapid attack. RA once melee + sos is 20+. Otherwise you miss too much. I don't bother with riposte or controlled retreat. CR useless if moving, and evade not high enough (~10 vase) for riposte. At end, whirlwind and momentum are needed. Momentum earlier if you have the str for it. I switched often between angrist and deathblade.

If you get neither, then a short sword is OK. Song of sharpness + woven dreams then become important!

And, don't dawdle anywhere above 400 or so. Find stairs down and go. Nothing at those depths is worth searching for. I was at 350 by 1100 turns. 500 by 1600. 500 and down you can spend more time on. After about 700 though, if you have staff of treasures, get the good stuff and leave! I try not to linger on lower depths. Too easy to get killed if not careful.

Hope that helps someone. Oh, know your opponents. Take out vampires, anything which poisons, and anything darkness first (esp. darkness). Breath serpents die quick with sharpness. With cruel blow, light up as many as you can, while killing the weak to boost sos. Have armor swaps for different enemies if needed, same for weapons. High dam enemies - have more evade. High att rating, get more absorption. Sounds backwards, but troll guards are 8d4. No armor will absorb 32. But, you can avoid it. Cat warriors are 1d9. They can't do much against say 7-16 armor (which I had at one point). Let the suckers hit you.

OK, that should do it. My next project is mission impossible. I'm going to attempt to kill big V in 2 rounds (or even 1). If my calculations are right, 2 rounds should easily be doable. 1 if lucky. I've never done smithing - psi if you read this, any pointers for smithing?

Add: I took out the riff-raff with deathblade, it works much better against trolls.

If you hit 3hp, it is by definition not an easy fight, I think.

I suppose that is true! Considering I had 89 at full health buffed. I think he hit me for about 65 or so that swing. I never was below 20 something otherwise. I probably in the future should have a little more con/evade, may not get lucky again!

I'm not convinced the game needs making any harder. If you are finding it too easy then try one of the weaker races perhaps!

The easiest way to play a smith is to actually ignore smithing and get comfortable at 800+ as quick as possible, collecting any smithing gear as you go. Then pump smithing, forge additional smithing kit and then start making your gear ensuring you don't run out of time before crafting your masterpiece. The most important thing is _Revelations. Without that you'll waste too much time searching for forges.

Killing V in one round would be special. I used to look at what it would take to one shot him, but I don't think one could realistically get close.

Even if you don't post it to the ladder, it would be cool to see your character dump in the thread. I'm amazed at the whole run. I've probably tried 5 or so times to speed run Sil 1.3, but I usually end up too deep with too little XP and run out of healing supplies.

Yep would be nice to see the details too. 1 place I suspect you've had a bit of luck is not getting the Shelob/Ungoilant tag team in the throne room. Without floor lights or high will & an _earthquake they'd be a nightmare to fight on that kind of build. Glaurang is also a potential deal breaker though I'm not sure he generates in the throne room without danger. Possibly you could keep him out of los enough to handle him.

Now you are talking! So, what would be the theoretical most-possible-damage-in-one-round against the old V? Like, go crazy... best song of slaying build up with super-ridiculous-weapons with V in such-a-such condition. Let there be damage!!! How close could you realistically get?
                              You are on something strange

I wonder if you could get slaying up super high and then switch to lorien to sleep him (or get a lucky vanish) and go for a stealthstab...
