As far as I can tell, the "victory dancing" in Crawl is exactly what is being discussed above, and has been removed completely in the latest development versions. You can now put your experience towards whatever skills you like without having to perform the action.
There are still some restrictions; for example, to train a weapon skill you have to be carrying a weapon of that type.Comment

Yes, that is what was meant by dancing. While it worked OK for skills you actually use all the time like weapon skills or conjurations, if you wanted to train a skill that is only useful occasionally or in an emergency, like maybe translocations, it could be very hard to get the XP to go there without doing it.
Just as an example of the kind of thing that happened; it was pretty much optimal when starting a new wizard character to begin the game by casting Magic Dart 100 times at a wall, just to make sure your starting XP went into the magical skills which are vital to an early spellcaster, rather than dodging or something.
In 0.9 (the current stable version,) it has been mostly removed, but you still have to victory dance to gain a new skill you don't already know. In 0.10 it is gone completely.
With the old system, if you played carefully (and very tediously,) it was possible to get almost all your XP to go where you wanted them by excessive dancing, so the new system is designed to make the same thing possible without the tedium. (The idea of the remaining restrictions on what skills you can train is that if you could have victory danced the skill you can now train it without the dancing - so you have to know at least one fire spell from to train Fire Magic, etc.) If you like the idea of the skills improving when you use them, just pretend your character is practising them while resting or running around the dungeon.
IMO it makes the game much more enjoyable, and while it was possible to play without victory dancing, doing so often ended up with situations in the late game like having 500k XP in the pool, with all the commonly used skills maxed, and the skills you really want to train still being low.Comment
-
Thank you for the comprehensive explanation - I clearly never got far enough in Crawl to experience this phenomenon, or indeed require any rarely-used skills. I can see why the removal of the restriction is a good thing though."Been away so long I hardly knew the place, gee it's good to be back home" - The BeatlesComment

Will, I'm absolutely fine with you modifying the code for your own use, and emailing it to people who contact you as well. A fork that split the player base at this time (9 days after release) would be very bad for the game though, and sad for the 8 years on and off that I've put into developing it. So long as it is mostly a private thing though, I have no problems.
(I should note that I have no *legal* power to stop anyone doing anything they like with the source code as it is GPL.)Comment

Abilities: early: assassination, keen senses. later: polearm mastery, precision, dodging, sprinting, cruel blow. recently: finesse, Easterling-bane (yes, I was dissapointed that I couldn't chose Easterlings as my specialty since they were the ones who killed my previous best characters so I changed it so I could).
I'll have to ditch the +3 arrows because there isn't enough slots in the quiver (that would be way too much trouble to add for my mod...)
I've had a bit of trouble staying under my weight limit to avoid being slowed. Stacks of spears are heavy.

YACD update.
Best I've done yet.
Starting to have some tough decisions what to keep and what to leave behind, also still barely keeping below my weight limit (actually at the moment I'm a little past it).
Even with significantly more time allowed per depth level than realSil, I'm not getting more than one level past my minimum depth.
Dex was lowered by a potion of clumsiness.
Abilities added since last dump: crippling shot, hardiness, opportunist (so I left behind my spear of opportunity), inner light, and flanking (I like this one).

I'm getting really frustrated with this character because of lack of identify and trap doors. I've fallen through about five trap doors (and used the up stairs a couple times, hoping irrationally to find the stuff I lost because of the trap door). I've lost several unIDed special items and magic items that way. Once I saw a staff of recharging I could've used to recharge my identify staff but fell through a trap door before I could pick it up.
Now, I have three unIDed rings and an unIDed amulet (some of which are on the floor in the room I'm in), and I don't know what to do with them because I have no space in my inventory for them. Lore Master is beginning to seem like an essential buy at this point in the game.
