Newb: how to use lantern or torch to "fuel" a light source?

I have collected various torches and lanterns, and when examined, they say they can provide light or "fuel another light source" for up to 7000 turns. How do I use them to fuel another light source? And why would I want to do this? Can I just carry 3 torches and a couple lanterns, as I've been doing, until they flame out? My longest run has been 350 feet, so maybe I'm not seeing how "fuel" works.

    Thanks in advance.

'u' is the "use item" command, and works to do the obvious thing for potions, herbs, etc. Not completely intuitive for "refuel", but there it is.

And to answer the "why": it's often advantageous to refuel your torch in a safe place before it runs out rather than spending that turn wielding a new one at a point not of your choosing, and lanterns can bear enchantments, so fueling an enchanted lantern from an unenchanted one normally makes sense.

You can also end up with non-stacking torches cluttering up the inventory. At some stage I'll usually compress them all in to a stack with 3k fuel each.

Thanks for your replies. So is there a "fuel" item in the game? When I use "u" on a torch, I merely equip it. I suppose there's some sort of fuel item I loot, and then I use "u" on that?

Lanterns are normally refuelled with flasks of oil.

Is there a way to refuel wooden torches with Mallorn torches?
My best try at PosChengband 7.0.0's nightmare-mode on Angband.live:

No, and doing so would be a bad idea, given Mallorn torches have little fuel but provide a much brighter light.

Thanks. That answers my question. I've never found one, but then I'm only only my fourth playthrough.

I was also confused by this, as the in game Mallorn torch description states it's possible (in v1.5.0.):

Ah that seems like a bug. Thanks for catching that.
