It's not entirely up to me, I merely suggested it, but I feel it would be more "true to tolkien" if those were replaced with something else

The list of remaining NPC's to paint is getting smaller and smaller, are the replacements still up for discussion?

They've been done - the changes are here.

Would someone like to put together a monster.txt file entry for that?

I hate to say it, but is it just me or are those new descriptions rather bland?

(Or maybe it's just that the angel descriptions were very un-bland.)

Okay, here we go... These aren't much better, but I think they have a little more pizzazz.

                    ----------

                    Ainu:
One of the first children of Eru, human-like in form but painfully beautiful to look upon. You can think of no reason that a servant of Eru might face you in combat; yet this one stands before you, and its eyes are ablaze as it prepares its next volley of spells.

                    Maia:
One of the first children of Eru. Its body shines with glorious light, but its face is stern as it looks down at you.

                    Greater Maia:
One of the first children of Eru, human-like in form but god-like in power. The dungeon shakes with each of its delicate steps.

[Note: with the Blue Wizards, I'm taking some "artistic" license; I figure Alatar and Pallandro "fell" a la certain Biblical angels, and so had a line of descendents. Tolkien would probably hate this, but he'd also hate Angband in general, so whatever.]

                    Blue Wizard
Direct descendents of the Istari Alatar and Pallandro, the Blue Wizards have passed their forefathers' knowledge down through the generations, and have lost little of it. They are formidable opponents, and rumor has it that they still have some friends in high places...

[Here I'm assuming Istari are male, but a female variant would be cool for flavor.]

                    Istar
A weathered-looking traveler, wearing a cloak that has seen better days, and holding a plain walking stick in one hand. He appears to be traveling alone.

[Tolkien mentioned Arien forsaking her material form...]

                    Arien, Maia of the Sun
The Maia who sails the Sun across the sky has descended into Angband to kill you. She wears no mortal shell; her body is made of fiery golden light, painfully bright even when you close your eyes, and hot enough to melt armor and flesh alike.

[Here I'm assuming Osse looks much like his boss.]

                    Osse, Herald of Ulmo
Encrusted with barnacles, slimy and dripping, the Maia of sea storms has dragged himself down into Angband to bring you to a watery grave. Terror grows in your heart with each squelching step of his approach.

                    Radagast the Brown
A stocky, smiling man in brown robes, holding in his right hand a gnarled walking stick. A moth of some kind is perched on his shoulder. If you didn't know better, you'd think it was talking to him...

                    ----------

That's it for now, hope those were decent. If you guys want any more I should be able to supply them.

I really loved the "But it is here and you have to kill it" line from the Angels description. It would be nice here.

In fact I would still favour keeping the Angel ( for its description alone ). Maybe as an unique Hominid.

These look good. Haven't had a chance to incorporate them but they'll probably show up in a nightly soon.

So, these descriptions are (mostly) merged.

The spirit took me and I ended up changing some of them a little bit. Therem, let me know if you think what I ended up with was OK. I tried to strike a balance between the historical info about Ainu/Maia and the descriptive tone.

Thanks again for your prompt on this.

While you are at it, how about adding a new kind of opponent to this category?

                            the Angband Developer (multi-hued 'A')
You feel that the very fabric of reality is trembling as this entity approaches. It is wielding a keyboard with a reform layout <+5 speed> and is as immortal as Angband itself. It is magical, casting spells which summon Software Bugs and summon Laser Mice. It can alter the code to reduce all stats, alter the code to lower experience and alter the manual to confuse.

                            (Just joking.)

A well-intentioned but rather harried-looking man, he is busily changing everything you hold dear about the game. He moves too quickly for your tastes, and somewhat erratically. He is magical, casting spells which generate unbalanced artifacts, invoke storms of shoes, and rewrite the fabric of existence without apparently changing anything, about 1 time in 8. He can hit to improve your gear, hit to nerf your gear, and hit to suggest that you go ahead and make your own variant if you don't like what he's doing.
