So, it looks like macros was removed from vanilla. Now, was the keymap code changed to compensate for this recently, or would the keymap code from older variants work just as well?

Keymaps have been (or are being) changed to support things that they couldn't previously do. -
There are still some things not working from the old macros.
I lost 3 macros that I used very often.
1. m1a5'\e , I want to target the nearest monster if none is selected, but having an invalid target clears the buffer. It also should kill the confirmation prompt when I have no mana, but this gets cleared also.
2. Macro ' to * . When I am in targeting mode I want to have the key for nearest at hand. It is a shift key on my keyboard. But keymaps don't work in target mode. So I have to move my hand quite a bit, during trash cleaning.
3. Macro Esc to Enter. So that I can cancel the target mode and similar stuff. Again no keymaps in menus. I often end up firing into a wall or thin air instead of canceling because it is less work. It could be in character, but it is somewhat annoying.
