Is there something akin to a noob developer's guide?

I'd like to try my hand at a variant, but I could really use some sort of starting point just to help me get my feet wet. I'm not exactly a stranger to programming, but I'm not the greatest either. I think if I can get some momentum going I'll be good.

I'm jonesing to put together a stonepunk/caveman sort of thing. Partly because I think it could be interesting, but mostly because I really want an excuse to call it "RockBand".

Vanilla has some code documentation via doxygen; the latest version of FA has more. Looking at either of those would give lots of info about the general structure of *band code.

The only way you can get your feet wet developing an Angband variant is by gently lowering yourself head first into a body of water and holding your breath until you get past your ankles.
