Yes, it shows the damage with your current gear. And it makes life easier, both because there are much fewer newbie questions about damage, because you don't have to wield it to find out what the damage bonus from +STR (if any) would be, and because it's a bad UI design to make the user do the arithmetic over and over.

If you have fractional blows (which I think V will get soon) it makes a big difference. Consider a monster with 87 HP left.

If you have one blow for 189 damage, then your turn will kill that monster and you'll be done. If you have fractional blows, and each blow does 63 damage, then after two blows you'll kill the monster and have a 3rd one free.

The other nice thing is that with some weapons you'll see "with 2 more dex you'll get another blow" and you'll know how much damage to expect. If total damage were shown that wouldn't be possible.

Finally, I think critical hits would be significantly different depending on whether you have 1 huge blow or 3 smaller blows, so it's worth knowing which of those cases you're in.

I could imagine showing total damage also, but I don't think it should replace damage per blow.

All right, thanks for the answers. To be fair, I am not too concerned by the display itself, I was mostly wondering if I had missed something important in my understanding of combat in angband.

I did not know about the "with 2 more dex you'll get another blow" feature, sounds nice.

Is there any good reason not to say something like

          14 damage/blow [42 total]

I was thinking that (blows/damage per blow) might be useful if it was auto inscribed, then you would have to look no further than your inventory.

I was thinking that, but then I changed my mind. Inspecting isn't that much of a imposition, and how often do you need to check these number anyhow? Upon finding a new weapon and stat gain/loss, right?

Maybe put the numbers for your wielded weapon in the status area, so that changes to them would be immediately obvious.
