    Item inspection screen

    As requested,

I am working out an item inspection screen with item texts, so I am wondering, which variants ( or non-bands ) have the best item inspection screens for you, and why ? What should any variant steal in order to provide a good experience ?

ToME color-codes some of the fields, which is nice. So for example, resists in blue, stat boosts in green, slays in red. If you don't want to do this, alternately the different item attributes should be broken up into paragraphs.

Well one of the two things i really miss from nethack is the ability to customize color coding of the display in colornethack or interhack.

What would also be cool would be a list of changes you get when swapping something in or out. like: you would lose Rchaos and gain Feather Fall.

Yeah, that would be cool... I always liked that feature from console RPG's, where it showed all your stats before and after equipping a new item, with increased stats highlighted in blue and decreased ones highlighted in red
You read the scroll labeled NOBIMUS UPSCOTI...
You are surrounded by a stasis field!

          That's a really good idea.

One thing I do in V is I inspect the item I have equipped so it appears in my Item/Monster recall Term (I have both set to one term, and it changes accordingly - very useful) and then display info of the item I'm deciding on.

Since the recall term only updates after the description is closed, I have basically a side-to-side item comparison - incredibly useful for weapons.

What is this color coding of the display you speak of ?

You can use a config file to color any phrase that matches a regex (in interhack):

Coloring general messages would be something i would love to have in angband to:

                Or in the simpler version:
Menucolors is a patch that allows you to colorize individual rows on a menu based on what regular expressions match its text. The patch was written by paxed and can be found here. You can color the inventory menu, the spellcasting menu, the enhance menu, the options menu, and more. Menucolors are currently only supported in a terminal and (partially) in the Windows GUI. For example, you could color all blessed items bright cyan, all cursed items bright orange, and all uncursed items dim green. F

Sang has the best flavour, but is deliberately short on spoily details like numbers.

                    Hi all,

Resurecting that one, to ask :
what is the reason for showing damage per hit for weapons, instead of damage per round? When comparing two weapons, I pick the one with highest damage per round, so I need to mentally multiply the number shown with the number of hits per round, which is not very practical.

Myeah, it is not that simple
If you have one weapon that does 1 blow and 10 damage per blow.
And you have another weapon that does 2 blows and 5 damage per blow.

You should always wear the 2 blow weapon if your to hit is the same. ( More damage over time ).

I might be missing your point here, I don't understand how you could get more damage if the "same amount" of damage is spread over more blows. I am assuming damage display is "real" damage, ie it takes into account any =oDam you could have, etc.

Of course, multiple blows will always be better, because you can spread them accross multiple weak ennemies, by limiting the over-kill factor. It will also flatten your damage range (e.g., more rarely will you entirely with more blows).

But in a sustained fight against a single opponent, isn't that the same?

Yes--no difference for a single foe, but you can definitely tell the difference vs a mob of orcs or trolls.

And any off-weapon damage boosts (such as rings) count for every blow.

Do those pluses due to rings (and gauntlets of slaying and artifacts I assume) count in the damage display? Because if yes, I see no added value in having the damage displayed per hit, then.
