Me and a friend was thinking of composing some Angband MIDI-files and the idea is that every level feeling should have their own song, plus songs for the main menu/character creation, town and gravestone. I think those song files would add to the atmosphere and psychology of the game, when you are on safe/boring levels, friendly music would play and when you're on those superb or special greater vault dungeons the music would be really foreboding, intense and dark!
Imagine diving to deeper levels you really shouldn't be at, getting the feeling that your luck is about to turn. Suiting music starts playing as you wonder if your luck is turning to glory or to death as you can't resist your curiosity forcing you to explore the level. BANG! You're blinded and battered by Nar, the Dwarf! Your pulse races as the dark music keeps playing... Nar could kill you in just a couple of moves!
Your first instinct is to read the scroll of level teleport, but it doesn't work because of your blindness. The dark orcish war drum(?) in the music is ponding, as is your heart. You quaff your only potion of cure light wounds and hope you won't get killed or blinded again in the next turn...
You did it! You survived for another turn and now you can teleport to another level. You sink through the floor. And get an exellent feeling and even darker music but at least no monsters are in sight right now. You read the word of recall and rest to get up your hit points while you are waiting for the scroll to save you but your rest is disturbed by a grinding sound. An Umber Hulk has appeared! You start dashing away from it, hoping not to run into something even worse! You end up in a dead end, a dead end where you'll probably end up dead... The Umber Hulk gazes at you. You are confused and can't read another scroll because of that! The Umber Hulk hits you, you are almost dead as you were really beat up when you teleported from the previous level and didn't have time to rest... You prepare to hear the sad tones of the gravestone music but instead feel yanked upwards to the warm, welcoming town music. Aaah, the light of day! You'll NEVER return to that dungeon... At least not before you get to have an hour or so away from the computer...
If we make the level feelings MIDI's, could someone here on this forum make a patch/variant to put the music into the game??
