Stupid Windows Defender keeps deleting Poschengband.exe... Have disabled real-time protection and am attempting to exclude Poschengband.exe from scanning, but thought I'd make a note here about this. Hopefully this can be fixed.

I have the same problem with this version 5.0.0, but not with previous version. Windows Security Essentials is identifying a particular threat called "Trojan:Win32/Maltule.Clcl", which it classifies as a "severe" threat. It keeps deleting the executable. I tried to download and install 4 times with the same result. Can someone else confirm?

Correction. That's "Maltule.C!cl" with an exclamation point.

I think the best solution would be getting an antivirus which doesn't delete your stuff without asking you about it.

Yeah. I understand why MS does it: for the vast majority of users, the off chance of a false positive is vastly outweighed by the catastrophic results of a false negative. Here is how to fix it, when something goes wrong.

Perhaps a better question might be, what is it about the PosChengband EXE that causes it to be flagged by antivirus? Is there some way to fix that so that each user doesn't have to manipulate their antivirus settings just to play the game?

Exactly. Why are some here casually dismissing this under the assumption that it's either a false positive (Maltule.C!cl is not actually there) or that Maltule.C!cl is not potentially harmful? Of all the *bands I've downloaded (a hundred?) this most recent build of PosChangband.exe is the only one my antivirus has ever flagged as a threat. I know how to bypass my antivirus, but why should I assume it's a false alarm?

Well yes. That was my first response when my installation got deleted. So I tried building myself. Unfortunately...
One difference is this is one of the few that is built with MSVC. (I have tried compiling MINGW without success.)

I'm a windows user myself (I play console roguelikes on a Linux VM though), so I know how threatening getting a virus is.

I have a self-compiled copy (using MSVC) and have scanned it with Malwarebytes, Spybot S&D, and ClamWin. I have received no positive reports, for whatever that is worth.

Enclosed are malwarebytes and clamwin reports. Didn't bother running S&D again.

Just find out which version of the MSVCR distributable it is, and download it from MS. (Also, that is a debug build. Ouch.)

I have successfully made a screen recording (with XSplit Broadcaster 2.8) of my most recent Compo 190 attempt (Marian 96) - from the moment I downloaded the Compo 190 savefile to literally every movement in its first 2 hours of gameplay including in-game notes, with awesome heavy metal music in the background. This video will show how I approach the wilderness and how I fight dudes. You'll also notice that I resoundingly defended the wilderness at some parts during the video
