    Competition 130

Competition 130 is now available from the competition page; it is a Halls of Mist Human Spellsword (actually, a choice of three).

Note that comp 129 still has about a day and a half to run.

So, how do you load one of these from the mac command line? I've extracted them to /lib/save, but everything I've tried has failed to load.

    Code:
    macbook-pro:mist_131 jujuben$ ./mist -mx11 -- -n6 -u<./lib/save/Rinaldo>
-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `newline'
    macbook-pro:mist_131 jujuben$ ./mist -mx11 -- -n6 -u./lib/save/Rinaldo
    ./mist: Ignoring option: -u./lib/save/Rinaldo
    macbook-pro:mist_131 jujuben$ ./mist -mx11 -- -n6 -u ./lib/save/Rinaldo
    ./mist: Ignoring option: -u
    ./mist: Ignoring option: ./lib/save/Rinaldo
    macbook-pro:mist_131 jujuben$ ./mist -mx11 -- -n6 -u --./lib/save/Rinaldo
    ./mist: Ignoring option: -u
    ./mist: Ignoring option: --./lib/save/Rinaldo
A soft answer turneth away wrath. Once wrath is looking the other way, shoot it in the head.

The way I got this to work was to rename the files to 501.<name>, put the files in lib/save, and then use the command ./mist -u<name> with no space. So for Rinaldo, rename the file to 501.Rinaldo and use ./mist -uRinaldo to load the game.

        Nick,

just "highest score wins" would have worked better in Mist. Score = experience. (Ladder automatically knows the right order.)

The game gives a big score multiplier to winners who dove fast. Min Depth is much more relevant than turn count.

I don't think turn count should be relevant in Mist. A good player knows how long he can linger on a level safely.

          OK, that's done.

A little clarification about the three spellswords:

Desdemona has high DEX for three blows with a broad sword. Unlike the other spellswords, she's not that good with magic devices.

Regan has high STR for a broad axe and charge attacks. She has the highest Presence as well for the best Magic Device skill of the bunch, and a long spell range. All spellswords are bad at Perception, but Regan is the worst of all.

Rinaldo is the smart one with lowest fail rates and many known spells. He's the weakest melee fighter with "only" a long sword with two blows.

A tip: Wands of Magic Missile are now quite good weapons early on, but only for people with very high Magic Device skills! (Regan and perhaps Rinaldo qualify.)

              Mac port

The X-windows port at least *opens* if an X-terminal window is opened, and then I go to the mist directory and type ./mist

I don't know why the other posts suggest using ./angband; that does nothing for me, and there's no such file?

Anyway, haven't tried actually playing yet, but it does at least open the front screen

Ok, that was the good news. The bad news is that there is no option that I can see to open a savefile...

Why can't I get my resists over 55%? I have 55% rCold, but potions are freezing left and right.

It's capped at 55%. Temporary resists can go higher. Resists probably don't protect items at all (I don't remember really).

On Debian Linux I opened the savefile by moving it to the save folder and renaming it to 1000.Mikko where Mikko is my username and 1000 my user number. Then it opens automatically when I start the game with ./mist

On OS X the right name for the savefile is probably:
                        Code:
                        501.<name>
                        See here for more info.

To open a save file, first change the file name to 501.<name>, make sure the file is in lib/save, and use ./mist -u<name> with no space. So for Desdemona, change the file name to 501.Desdemona and use the command ./mist -uDesdemona

I should really put a readme.txt to the root game folder of non-Windows ports that explains how to run Mist on Linux or OS X... With clear instruction on loading savefiles, opening subwindows, etc.

And that same savefile works for all three option characters, if saved with different names?
