    Competition 97

Competition 97 is now available from the competition page; it is an Angband 3.2.0 Dunadan Warrior. I did (on the 4th attempt) remember to set disconnected stairs; it has no monster memory because NOONE SENT ME A SAVEFILE. You want monster memory? Then send me a savefile. It is very, very simple, people - you want some feature, or variant, or whatever in the comp - either send me a savefile or DON'T COMPLAIN.

Apparently that's been pent up for a while

As a further note, comp 96 has less than a day to run.

TRUE STORY: I was going to send you a save file, but I forgot to set the birth option for disconnected stairs. I can't suicide a character just for the sake of restarting with the options properly set. People probably wouldn't want play one of my standard roller abortions anyhow.

This priest has been a real pain in the ass too. His strength was drained to 3 making melee with his mace impossible. Couldn't find a light-weight weapon (or any weapon) in the dungeon and no restore strength in town, so I had to sell almost everything to buy a bow and some arrows. Walked back down and earned just enough cash to buy restore strength next time in town. At this point I had to sell just about everything again so I could buy my crappy old mace back. What I wouldn't have done for 'cause light wounds'.

That is a great story - thanks for sharing. I don't really see what Nick's problem is anyway - I mean, how hard is it to generate a savefile? Pfffsh. The man writes a variant ffs - surely it's high time we had an FA comp? Haven't had one of those for ... minutes.

      Happy new year Nick ;-)

All right. Just remember, I was prepared to keep this civil.

The point, had you bothered to actually read my post, was that people ask for certain features in the comp character, such as complete monster memory. I actually don't happen to have any such V savefiles lying around - not having played V for some time due to its incredible blandness. If only someone would put some work into it, maybe it would be worth playing.

Last FA comp - six months ago. Here's a link to the list of competitions, in case you can't find it for yourself.

        Happy new year Nick ;-)
        Same to you

Uh, victory conditions are pretty nasty this time. Winner with least experience or if not winner then most experience / game turn.

That means that if you aim for win you need to discard all experience potions pretty much after stat-gain depth, but if you do and don't win, you end up in last place in chart.

Now to figure out which monsters give good drops without good XP...

Or maybe I should try vault-looting approach.

Crap, I meant winner with least turns. Fixed on comp page.

Doh. Good job you didn't misplace an apostrophe in your last salvo ... oh wait ....

Now, please could we use *standard turns* rather than game turns? That is why they were introduced, since they remove all speed/blows/shots-related issues from turncount. The only thing they don't address is the issue of recharge times: these are fixed in game turns, so we just have to cope with the fact that at higher speeds you wait longer for the Palantir to recharge. There isn't a consistent end goal to change this to, so it's been left as-is. Having stuff take "longer" to recharge when you're faster isn't great, but it's 100% consistent.

I kind of liked the idea of trying to get a winner in time without killing much stuff. I'm pretty bad at optimizing turncounts (it's just too boring) so I won't be trying this comp.

I thought about making a comp in least real time: first posted winner counts. Maybe different variant though. O or something hard to win.

Where are the running disturb options? I'm not interested in mining with this guy and I'm tired of my running being interrupted by treasure veins.

All competitions feature dis-connected stairs (when possible). Check the STICKY for complete rules and guidelines.

Hmm - this is the first competition I've played at any length; I can tell my style of play does not lend itself to these rules -- too slow. :-) So far, making decent progress, but cl-28 at dl-31, XP 87577 in 61773 std turns seems to be way slow compared to the competition.

On the other hand, I've also never won, which seems to say my play is too incautious... there's a balance in the middle I have yet to find I guess. Dive faster but run away a lot more?
