    Competition 94

Competition 94 is now available from the competition page; it is a Z+Angband Mindflayer Chaos High-Mage.

Note that comp 93 still has about a day to run.

Has anyone else experienced crashes opening the save file? Even more odd, the crashes seem completely random. If I just keep trying to open the save file then it eventually works.

R.I.P. Onon IV: He was having a wonderful time blasting brown Sand Dwellers with his Rod of Light when "The Homonculus hits you. You are paralyzed!" I really ought to change the color of those guys.

It's great to see Z+ get featured after a long hiatus.

In case anyone's having trouble running Z+ under Windows Vista (or Windows 7? Not sure, don't have that), if the game crashes on loading, delete the "Z+angband.ini" file and try again.

Also, be aware that in Z+'s magic system you make choices between spells; as a high mage you can learn all of them but you can also forgo some in order to specialize in others. See the faq in the download package for details.

Is there any particular reason why some schools of magic (life, sorcery, illusion, trump) can find their 3rd book at dungeon level 65, but poor Chaos mages (along with Nature and Death mages) must wait until dungeon level 75?

Yes. Basically, for balance between the schools a little. I don't recall doing it to punish Chaos, Nature, and Death, but rather to ease things on Life, Sorcery, Illusion, and Conjuration: the latter two because I wanted to encourage them, Life because frankly the 3rd book isn't that great, and Sorcery because I was trying to make the Enchant Weapon / Armor spells good for something.

It's sort of hard to specifically justify it but I remember feeling like Chaos, Nature, and Death were good but Life, Sorcery, Illusion, and Conjuration needed help.

Don't quote me on this but I believe it makes very uncommon occurrences (both good and bad) more common.

                    From Roch's dump:

The dungeon in Glineth Keep should bottom out at about level 25. Explore the map, you should find deeper dungeon entrances you can easily access. I'd say look for a '4' or '5'. But beware, don't approach an '8' or '9', the guards could kill you. Go to the map makers in every town that has one.
But the Town Hall in Glineth Keep asked me to kill something guarding dungeon level 45ish? If the dungeon stop around 25 (I've gone down to 27 for now), will I find the guards in some other dungeon then?

How is the winner determined in Competition 94, if the turncount is not shown in the char dump and on the ladder itself? By the way, I'm trucking along with my Onon IX who has killed a few Troll priests before reaching char lvl 20.

Good question - looks like I'll have to make something up
