    Competitions 81 and 82

For your enjoyment, Andrew Doull has produced a double competition, Master vs Apprentice.

The Master (if I've got it correct) is Mirest (comp 81) and the Apprentice is Aspir (comp 82). There will be a winner of each comp, and also an overall winner, as described on the competition page (or the other competition page).

Now that everyone is thoroughly confused, go and play!

Note that comp 80 still has a couple of days to run.

Heh, the "Act Turns" were suppose to be "Active turns" or "Activity turns". IIRC, they are the number of keystrokes, or something close (that's why they are lower than "Player turns"). What is nice about them is that early big speed find (not possible in Un, without diving, which is not quite possible, either) does not affect them at all. What is bad is that if you are resting with the '5' key, you consume turns (but in Un the first of the '5' keystrokes does something: gives you the blocking bonus (AC and to_hit, IIRC, you can see on the character screen). Resting is free, which is bad news for masters of resting optimization, but let's you play for low turncount in a more natural style, except more aggressively. (IIRC)

    Have fun!!!

Ah, seems to be working now (from the official release thread link, anyway).

Thanks Nick. Just wanted to say that the reason for the double competition is some of the mage classes in Unangband are pretty 'different'. So if playing the Master doesn't suit your playing style, you can choose the Apprentice. Or vice versa.

Unangband 0.6.4-pre2. It's listed on the competition page under Variant at the top.

Sweet. Looks like I'll be putting Sand III aside for a while.

e: Am I using Sting wrong? I stand right next to a sleeping yellow centipede and aim it to the right, or select it and aim at it, and it doesn't do anything.

You're not mistaken. It's not working. I'll have to 'refresh' the binaries. Will do so tonight. [Edit: Windows and OS/X binaries are refreshed].

(I hadn't tested it recently, because at 2 mana, it was never worth casting. At 1 mana, it's suddenly a lot more viable. And I only made that change last night...)

I found a book of trailcraft but couldn't browse any of the spells, and it sold for very little gold. The spell tables on Andrew's website seem to indicate that it contains some useful spells for mages -- is it useful for the comp characters?

The mages are both specialists, so can't use the basic books from other mage schools.

I've fixed this, and 'refreshed' the existing pre2 source file and Windows binaries, rather than do a full pre release. Please download again... my apologies for this.

Hm, so I bought a new macbook over the holidays (my previous one died) only to find that there's no numberpad anymore. WTF?

Time to learn roguelike keys I guess. This will make my 'death by typo' count go up a whole lot, I'm thinking.

There's really no need to switch keysets. My laptop has no numpad - but I find that the nine number keys in the top row work perfectly well. My muscle memory had a much easier time adapting to shifting three keys left or right (to go up or down) than it did when I tried the rogue keyset.
