    Competition 79

Competition 79 is now available from here. It is an FAangband High-Elf Assassin ironman thrall (heh); this is just a short comp and I will do a longer one to cover the holiday period (suggestions welcome).

Note that comp 78 still has a day or so to run.

Heh, this should be messy fun. Is there a reason for using 1.0 rather than 1.0.3?

That's just newspeak. If you go to the FA site and download 1.0, you'll be getting 1.0.3 - I now just call it 1.0 and silently point the links to the latest 1.0.x.

Just a point that I forgot (and keep forgetting) - this character has Unlight, which means he gets RDark and extra stealth, but only when not wielding a light. So take off the torch, and destroy all the others.

Not really. I want the competition to run for about three weeks - so not too close to the end, I guess.

I've noticed that melee combat seems to create a lot of noise. For example, attacking a cave orc in proximity to a beholder can stir and even wake the beholder.

Can assassins assassinate? That is, kill (sleeping/awake) monsters in a while remaining silent.

Not silent, but their melee generates a lot less noise than other classes (25% springs to mind).

Since I don't normally get this deep, I've found a couple of items I've never seen before.

A Staff of Banish Evil. Is say something like "hurls all evil beings far from you". Does it work on uniques? Is it resistible? Are it's effects similar a Mass Teleport Other (evil only), that would be sweeet. Is it LOS or area of effect. Sorry bout all the questions, but I don't want to waste a single charge, with this, my best comp 79 attempt yet.

A scroll of Revel Curses. How does this differ from a nerfed ID?

EDIT: I just noticed the scoring formula for this comp. Getting a few levels deeper means quite a bit once you have some XP under your belt.

Works on all evil, no save, teleports them a decent distance, LOS

It's the only way to find out curses apart from by use; regular ID doesn't tell you about curses. Also, it guarantees finding all of them.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. ID does inform you of curses, doesn't it. I could have sworn that I've found items with a description such as. "Description of item. It is cursed. Description of curse. You know all the curses on this item". All revealed through normal ID. Boots of kicking and sword of the hunter come to mind.

There are some items with standard curses, like the ones you mentioned - they have the SHOW_CURSE flag, and ID shows you the curses. But there are some items (like weapons of Angband, and some randarts) which have random curses, which are not shown by regular ID.

Competition 79 is now finished - congratulations to Psi for winning (by dispelling a Hand Druj) and an honourable mention to HallucinationMushroom for getting a character to DL95.
