    @Estie--
Normally I'd agree. But not when the guy is coming in after winning Crawl, Rogue, etc. That is why he is having so successful (and fast) a game. Angband is a simpler game. Pos, Sil, etc are likely to be more to his taste after a quick familiarization game.

Thanks again everyone. Anwe has made it to level 80 and has a couple of spots that are covered.

      Complete N00b’s Journey: Part 3-15

So I began by dropping all of the items Estie suggested, and recalled back to D:75. I clear a vault containing Lorgan, Chief of the Easterlings and a cadre of mixed monsters, and find the Wicker Shield of Elros, which was good for confusion resistance but nothing else. The level also contained a Potion of Experience, which I quaff to get to level 44, and a potion of Augmentation, which I quaff to max out my stats. I decend to D:76, where I find a better ring of speed and take out Fang, Farmer Maggot’s dog and Ungoliant the Unlight, although doing so took All of my potions of Healing, forcing me to stay away from engaging any Uniques until I replenished my stock. I did find a potion of *Healing* on the same level, giving me justification to go to a vault and kill Castamir the Ururper, who dropped the Pick of Erebor, which was not a good weapon at this point. I teleport out of the vault after running into the Mouth of Sauron, and leave the level. Upon reaching D:77, I quickly descend to D:78 after a gelugon summons a large amount of major demons my way. D:79 had the Mithril Shield of Gil-Galad, which had the sustain dexterity attribute. I decide to drop the Wicker Shield of Elros, since the confusion resistance was not worth giving up the strength bonus from my current shield. D:80 saw me getting to level 45 due to a Potion of Experience that I found there. I also discovered a potion of Life through quaff-id and get the Band of Tulkas and two scrolls of *Destruction*, making my pack super-full and forcing me to Recall back to the surface. I drop off my Potion of *Healing* and scrolls of *Destruction* and Teleportation, buy fresh stocks of Scrolls of Phase Door and Recharging, switch my body armor for a Multi-Hued Dragon scale mail, and conclude the part.

The goal now is to get to get to at least D:88 and get as many of the following as possible:

3 more potions of *Healing* on top of those that I have now
      5 Potions of Life
      14 Potions of Speed
      5 Scrolls of Mass Banishment
      1 more scroll of Banishment
Missiles of Slay Evil or Holy Might

Is the band of Tulkas worth replacing any of the rings that I have collected? Or should I keep my ring of speed + ring of damage setup?

Are rods of Healing worth carrying? I believe so, but I’ve heard they’re not to reliable of a healing option and that potions are still far superior in that regard.

What should I do with the Mithril Shield of Gil-Galad: Stash it, keep it as a backup, or wear it?

Which of the below Uniques are worth facing?
      Baphomet, the Minotaur Lord
      Thuringwethil, the Vampire Messenger
      Pazuzu, Lord of Air
      Cantoras, the Skeletal Lord
Lungorthin, the Balrog of White Fire

Any other Uniques of note that I could run into at this point that I need to take note of?

The ladder has been updated with Anwe’s status, and I appreciate any tips and answers that you can throw my way.

Thuringwethil, maybe cantoras, depending on slays. Lungorthin and Pazuzu are bad without suitable immunity. (Fire, elec.) Baphomet has no drop

Don't worry about the ammo too much. You are already plenty strong to kill M in melee. (Let alone Sauron. You'd have done better to kill Sauron than Ungoliant with those healing potions.)
Speed 20, good HP and damage are by far the dominant determinants in success for equipment. Just about everything else is negotiable, but you may have to trade consumables for equipment and accept a higher chance of losing.

Your have enough potions of *healing*, though you are low on healing and ccw. You need !life only if you are lacking sustains, so if you can wear Gil-Galad without losing too much str/con, you are set.

For Sauron, an anti summoning bent corridor works well.

The routine against Morgoth looks like this:

You melee him, when you get low on health (<700), read a ?phase (bring a full stack of those to the fight), make sure he has no LOS, heal up while M moves towards you, using rods and low potions in preferance.

He drains charges, so wands/staves should be empty before engagement, only to be charged at need out of melee range. More importantly, he summons. If other dangerous creatures are close by, use ?phase as above; M will follow you through walls, leaving the summons behind. If there are too many summons, either use mass banish or teleport M away, destruct and wait for him to return.

Be aware that Destruction will remove Morgoth from the level if he's in the radius of effect. As far as the game is concerned, Morgoth is "just another unique", except that a) he cannot spawn above level 100, and b) if you kill him you win.

YASD #3: Getting killed by Great Wyrm of Many Colours through a combination of: lucky damaging fire and lightning breath, a single moment of neglect, and some miscalculations regarding my speed.

Deposited my 2 potions of speed to avoid them being broken and recalled back to D:80. It is there that I pick up a potion of Speed and Scroll of Mass Banishment from killing a Death Knight. After clearing an undead vault, I get to level 46 and also find scrolls of *Enchant Weapon*, which I use to give my Scimitar another point of damage. It was then that I realize that the scrolls that I bought were word of recall and not phase door, prompting me to Recall to get a fresh stock. I also get another potion of *Healing* before I leave the level. D:81 contains Holhenneth, which was useless since it didn’t have telepathy, the plate mail Soulkeeper’ that also got left behind since its attributes were not as good as my armors at my home (and didn’t grant poison resistance) and a Potion of Life. D:82 had Ji Indur Dawndeath, who dropped the Leather Shield of Celegorm which was another inferior shield at this point. I ran into a Great Wyrm of Many Colours who breathed lightning on me, which didn’t trigger any low hitpoint warnings (I admittedly didn’t see how much damage that I took from the first lightning breath that I took-I usually watch the HP like a hawk, so I really didn’t know how I didn’t see it there), and somehow messed up my speed calculations on running away and ended up getting killed by a lucky high-damaging fire breath. So yeah, I seriously fouled up and died to a cheap breath due to my one moment of neglect. I’m DEFINITELY adjusting the low hitpoint warning to 50% to avoid screw-ups like that from happening ever again.

Updated the ladder, and I’ll begin my next character soon enough. Seriously, it was my fault for miscalculating my speed, as I really would have teleported had I paid more attention. Textbook definition of an epic, epic fail.

EDIT: Well Jesus FREAKING CHRIST. I don't even have the flag of my death. I exported the file somehow, but I must have selected no when asked if I wanted to overwrite the file. So now I can't even show you the final log. Just shows how sloppy I've really gotten. You'll just have to take my word when I say that I got taken down to ~ -82 HP from the fire breath. Not making another character for another couple of days due to the apparently serious sloppiness of my playing. If I can't even properly export the final death flag, then I'm definitely in no condition to win any games in the near future.

Sorry to hear that - I was rooting for you.

I dont know what system you are playing on, but is your option to colour code low hp checked ? Personally I dont pay much attention to text warnings anymore since my @ turns red when low on health.

Not making another character for another couple of days
What, a couple of days no play ? I am going to miss my daily advice post.

Too bad. Still not a good run though!

I do have low hp color coded, but I somehow missed the color change. The text is rather small, so that contributed to the loss somehow.

Yeah, not only because of my sloppiness, but also because I need to work on my Ph.D. dissertation. It's crunch time right now.

And yeah, Thraalbee, this character had too many screw-ups and poor judgment decisions for that guy to have a chance.

Pity. :/ Don't take it too bad, though; this kind of things happen. Angband at deep levels is brutal, and something like this was likely to happen sooner or later. We all lose high-level characters, and even more when one is not an expert player. You learned a lot about the game from this run though; the next time will be easier.
