    it's not about winning the game, it's about collecting shiny shiny artifacts. it's that "ooh" moment wen you find something awesome, which then turns in MUHAHAHA when you are finally a powehouse who tramples underfoot black reavers and curbstomps drujis.

      @Sky-
      With standard artifacts, half the time you end up with ESP on an ego item anyway. (Cloak or Crown of the Magi, for example, or else a Bow of Lothlorien. Occasionally even a helm of ESP.) Lack of a good ESP artifact just isn't that big a deal. And while I tend to find playing without artifacts boring (there's very little meaningful choice in your gear), it's certainly not a huge challenge; certainly less of one than a weak class-race combo.

        Haha, agreed. For me the journey to M has always been way more fun than the actual fight or satisfaction of winning. In my current game a Mystic dropped me an X5 bow (+28) with +4 Stealth, +2 speed and pConf (will have to replay this randart set as a Ranger ); now just need off bow extra shots. I've never found an item with extra shots on it, but last game real early I got my first off-weapon extra-blows item in an amulet that had Rogue's object detection spell as an activation. Threw away that @ fairly carelessly, tho, soon after; what a shame. In a strange way the sting of losing such a cool @ is one of the finer qualities of Angband. It sucks big time, but it has a strange, humbling effect on me, intermingled with awe that makes me appreciate the game that much more. Death matters in Angband, so when I take those risks, it's all the more weighted with gravitas. I made a note of that randart set, and may play it again sometime in the future.

        I haven't played Standarts in awhile, but it does seem it's much easier to get really powerful artifacts in Randarts than comparable ones in Standarts, especially as drops. I'm currently wielding a blessed "MoD" Katana (5d8) (except it weights 12lbs. instead of 40) (+20) dam, slays **dragons**, *Undead*, Giants, Animals, weak pois&cold brands, +5 WIS, rBase, rLite, rDis, hLife, sInv dropped by an Easterling Warrior. A bit bonkers, really. Will likely be used all the way up until DL99. It's already 824 to dragons and my @ has only just started statgain. I'm only on DL46, 27K turns and I already have two endgame artifacts and I'm already base speed +17 with an amulet of speed and speed boots.

          This is gonna sound a bit cheesy but I don't care. Since the short time since my last post, my power has grown at a very rapid rate. And I'm playing this super atmospheric, spiritual chill music that totally fits the awe inspiring loot I'm finding. It's almost like the music preludes the finds. Found two rings of power, one gives cold immunity, the other acid brand to my super "MoD" (sorry, Sauron). I've been *crash* diving since my last post, but I keep finding vaults on my way down, so even though I was meaning to find loot once my dive finished, I've found crazy good stuff on the way and I'm only halfway done diving (since I keep finding ?DD).

          Cold immunity is a godsend because it means I'll be able to stockpile potions and get to the main fights sooner. At this rate I may just crack 40k turns (but probably not). Strange, even hasted to +27 Saruman gave me trouble. He is usually a pathetic push over, but he kept blasting me with stuff then teleported me away when he only had one purple * left. Then summoned stuff in quick succession when I teleported back to him, but my ranged attack is nearly as impressive as my melee. So, yeah, living the dream per Sky's last post in here.

            I tend to look for pStun for the endgame, which is probably going to mean using a hat for it (Serenity, Gondor, Numenor), so I'll usually go for one of the RoPs for ESP, or an amulet, since apart from Trickery, all amulets are kinda shitty.
