    winner or LOOOSER ?

    i'm doing my preliminary here because i think i have a winner. i'm not sure how i will handle the morgoth fight but i'm prepared to grind it to win it.

    for fun, i decided to start my very first ... Priest. i mean the first Priest that ever made it to CL2.
    And i decide to make it a Hobbit, because of *reasons*. +6 STR, +6 WIS, +2 DEX, +6 CON.

    starting gear was very poor, 3 food, 3 torches, 2 !phase, 3 oil, 2 CLW, and one book2.
    i dip in and out of DL1 to recover my mana and ding to CL2, 3, and 4. By CL4 i had 37 HP thanks to some amazing HP rolls.

    i slowly clear CL1 about 3 times, then hit town again. i found a sling and i buy some shots, my best bet against mobs. i stock up on recall, phase, food + torches, and i plan to dive.

    which doesn't happen. i get to DL3 and find a nice long corridor with some green worm mass and i get up to Cl10 or so.

    i walk back and restock, and i go back to DL5, and i find a corridor with some red worm mass, which are worth 1.5 XP each at this time. i grind to CL19 easily in about 10 minutes.

    i nearly die to hunger, because red worms burn your recall scrolls and your books, so i have to walk back, and quaff CLW to stay alive. i finally find some mold to eat.

    i sell my stuff and gear up, then i start diving. i pass by the first 15 or so levels because there's nothing there now. i stumble on a 7-9 and a 7-7 which happen to be a potion of strength, and a book5 (ethereal openings). having Identify early on is *very* useful.
    i also manage to kill a couple of starting uniques for a light of pConf and i buy a helm of pBlind.

    i strech my mana pool with a amulet of wisdom +2 (soon to be +3), a potion of WIS from the black market. i avoid any stat swap potion.
    I find a boots of speed +2 somewhere before DL15.

    my first major break comes through finding a +2 WIS artifact on DL25 (after scumming a few times for a decent level) and a Boots Of Speed +10 drop from Azog on DL26. boom. At DL27 i get a jewel of +4 STR.

    i start diving .. and find myself at CL35 on DL76.

    this is way too hard; the first Great Wyrms appear, and drolems too, and i have no rPois - i could get instakilled at any time.

    i make a bold move and decide to reset my recall to DL1. this proves to be really fruitful and i stumble upon a few vaults, plus one good drop from a random mob. i manage to max CON, pBlind, pConf, 200 WIS, all resists except sound and nexus, a shield of preservation, and tons of swaps.

    i make my way to DL50+ and find two endgame weapons, one 550dmg vs demon/dragon/undead, and one 380dmg vs evil.
    i also manage to buy a helm of ESP (forfeiting my pBlind) which gets soon enough replaced by a ESP artifact, and find a RoS +10, for base +20.

        800 HP is a bit on the light side; another couple levels wouldn't hurt. But the MoD in storage is plenty vs. the bosses. You have enough rMana. Your biggest lack is (mass) banishment/*destruction*. Pick up some more of those while you level up and you're good to go.

          i am now CL47 and i have found a Wrath of God. I also have 12 !speed and a rod of Speed. i've found three MBan since i started (one of which was lost to a Hellhound) and i used one for a GV, and one to kill The Mouth Of Sauron. Pretty solid choices, if you ask me.
          i'm gonna wait until the weekend to do the last run, but i'm confident this is a winner.

          oh yeah, my HP absolutely sucks. this is with 210 CON too.

            Yer playing a Hobbit priest. Of course your HP sucks. I don't like to use ?MB for anything except the most valuable vaults (for weak character only) and bosses. It's incredibly valuable. Of course, if you don't care about turn count, you can afford to lose a couple. (I prefer to store them at home where they're safe, unless I've got fire immunity.)

              Is "the Short Bow of Beorn" just a weird stroke of luck of the randart random name generator?
              I remember someone mentioning that the name generator (based on a Markovian model) sometimes gets stuck into sequences with a unique continuation, maybe that's what is going on here.

                    Yep. Any unique that isn't currently on the dungeon level can be summoned, and when you hit a monster with *destruction* they are removed from the level. There is therefore some tactical utility to teleporting nasty uniques away during the Morgoth fight, as once they're on the level they can't be summoned again.

                      i killed sauron, but i realized i'm not ready to kill morgoth yet. vecna, ancalong, lungorthin and gothmog, drauglin, huan, radagast, chronos, possibly more, all still alive. oh yeah ariel too. and ungoliant. i need to kill some of these before i can take him.
                      i somehow got brought down to 78hp ... not cool.

                          Ungoliant is definitely not worth killing. Vecna is worth killing. The balrogs may be worth killing, especially if you have fire immunity. But there's no great need to kill them all.

                            not for the fun, but because morgoth summons them, then i teleport them away. and then i cannot tele self because i wind up in the same room as them.
                            i tried instead to cast glyph of warding, hitting morgot a few times, and when he breaks it i teleport him away. but, instead he will just summon *everything*, like 3/4 great wyrms, 3/4 horned reapers/pit fiends, a bunch of archliches (not too scary) and whatever the passwall L is called .. revenant? Black Reaver, that's it.

                            i've seen the spoilers, there's basically nothing else in my randart set. it's just what i got now.

                            btw, does resist fire & cold stack over time like Resistance does?

                              Once he earthquakes a bit, you can phase door away a short distance after a big summons, then teleport away monsters as they come into LOS.
