    It's shimmering vortices (and shambling mounds and shrieker mushrooms) that you want to detect in advance. They can just wreck you in a vault.

      Hmm.. yeah, I sometimes have problems with them, too. I tend to not notice them since they are so small. I guess that's what the monster pull down screen is for.

      Well these light randarts keep getting better and better. This has been the game of ultimate treasures. So this latest light (The star of Halan) does the following:

      Acid, Cold Immunities. Goodbye cold immunity ring. Oh, hello Huan! I'll be right there!
      rBase, rPois, rNexus, rNether, rDisench, pBlind, pConf, rLight
      <+4> STR

      Maybe I should share this Randart.txt after my game with someone who wants a good randart set.

        Holy Hogworts, I found another [/i]different[/i] Arkenstone? <+8> Speed. I swear, these randarts have jumped the shark.

        Defeated Sauron and his cohorts and his summons. Took the down stairs. Game crashed, but didn't save first so have to kill Sauron again. Not a biggy, wasn't too difficult, but hopefully it will go well again! Another time, the game also crashed on regular, non-nightlies version when taking downstairs to DL100.

        It went horribly. Sauron summoned Arien and Emperor Q. Sort of frustrated, I kind of threw caution to the wind and used up too many consumables. I used up all my healings and now I am going into my !*Healings* killing everything Q summons because I'm like the hell with it I am gonna kill all the uniques I can right now. Someone was kind enough to drop this; which is going to give me a fighting chance against Morgoth with limited consumables since there is a helm of CON/REGEN nearby.

        I am going to defeat Morgoth yet. Will do a character dump soon. This is gonna be epic!

        This isn't a bad weapon. I mean, it's not terrible.

        I mean, there are worse weapons to be had.

        Now if I start playing smart and not so reckless, maybe I can start crawling back my supply of consumables.

        Got some great gear but used up too many consumables in my reckless hack and slash of Q's summons. I figured healing potions are more common than ?phase doors so I didn't phase much. But then my phases got burned up anyway. /sigh.

        EDIT: I thought casting a mana storm used up all M's energy? I had 303 health, so I healed up to 603. His turn happened and I died. I didn't read the messages. I was moving at +35 speed.

        Video of Emperor Q no longer summoning. https://youtu.be/No3ewaLQSu0

          Keep some maiar alive. Chaining them is the best way to get consumables. Demons work too.

            Those Pit Fiends mean business. I was taking on too many of them; burning up everything. Yeah, let the Maias spawn, I'll do that this game if I make it that far. So far the artifacts have been less exciting. I found The Ring of Fire 'Belya'. Umm... it's not a ring of fire so why is it called that? Has +1 Light, +2 Digging and +3 Infravision. And little else. :-/ At least this artifact amulet is useful: pConf, and activates to restore experience and only takes 69 turns to recharge and has FrAct and <+3> INT/WIS

            Decided to take on an Ancient Green Dragon on DL32 using my last !Speed. Takes me down to 16 health, so I decide I my chances of dying are too great to try to finish him off (two red *) since I could just miss the entire round. So I ?phase away. I !Heal. Finish him off. He drops a rod of TO. Couple hallways later I kill some dark elves. One drops a wand of TO. I mean, who writes this stuff!

            Now I just need a Colbran to breathe off screen in quick succession and destroy both.

            Not this time: TO to Mr. Colbran. Until our next meeting....

            EDIT: Lol, I was so happy about the second TO item I didn't even realize one of the dark elves also dropped a rod of Detection! What in the beetle's blood!

            The love continues! Short bow of Hatar (X3) (+12, +27) dropped by Smeagol! I really hope off weapon shots are still in the game? It would be fun if every 10 dungeon levels you could find a special room where you could learn a skill. I'd learn the skill of Archery in the hopes of gaining the ability for extra shots.

              In my current Randarts game I have found 3 "rings of fire", two had the same name but were different. The second one essential was a <+5> Speed ring found on DL41. Level feeling was 5-3. So, couple questions. Why are these rings called "rings of fire" when they have nothing to do with fire? And secondly, are they artifact rings or some kind of ego ring? I thought anytime an artifact was on a level the level feeling had to be at least 5.

              Also found a good rPois/hLife/rChaos shield outside of a vault that had nothing of interest in it on DL40 (7-8) feeling.

                @grotug--"Ring of Fire" is of a special object type, INSTA_ART, that usually has exactly one object of that type. So with "randarts plus", you will see lots of repeated, purportedly unique, objects. It's hardly canon to have more than 3 elven rings (or multiple "one rings"), but that's what the change means. I think it is poorly thought out--randomly assigned powers essentially mean that light sources and amulets are guaranteed to be overpowered, as cloaks and gloves already are. PosChengband does a much better job, here.

                    I don't know why you can't play it now. It compiles fine on Linux, which pretty much always includes gcc.

                      I have no hacking skills (ie. I don't know how to use Terminal if that is somehow able to run things that run on Linux?) I suppose I could attempt it, though if I was really motivated .

                      EDIT: So I found some artifact armor with terrible AC. But it grants telepathy. I have a a helm of telepathy, but I am lugging around a cap of regen that I use periodically as a swap. I do not think the telepathy armor warrants losing 40AC. (My current Armor is Resistance [66, +21] vs the Ilwar armor which is [32, +11]. The Ilwar also provides resistance to poison and nexus which may come in handy if I find a better shield than the one I have now and/or boots of speed (have boots of stability at the moment). I suppose I could lug it around for awhile.... Hmmm.

                      I'm on DL50 and I lack only rNether, pStun and have a swap for pBlind (I found the Arkenstone).

                      I only have one scroll of phase door. Reading those damn unID'd Deep Descent scrolls always has me burning through my phase doors every time. I had 43 at one point. But I have 31 !CCW and 3 healing and 4 *Healing* and used several healing taking on a vampire pit (including Elders and Lords), but I picked up about as many as I used and a better ring of Damage from them. My damage was about 120-160 at the start of the level and even though I didn't find any good artifact weapons I finished the level at 315 to Undead and 269 to Evil. I also have a fast activating amulet that restores my experience so I gained a lot fighting those nasty vampires.

                      Gorlim the Betrayer invokes things. You die.

                        Linux has come a long way--when I used it last, it was impossible to use without the terminal.

                        Anyway, it's easy. Open the terminal, change directory (cd) to where you want the root.
                        $ cd angdir
                        # Get the source
                        $ git clone https://github.com/poschengband/poschengband
                        # and follow these instructions

                        Choose "run from the current directory", ie make with no install

                          Thanks for the instructions. It honestly looks pretty daunting. Just to clarify, I don't have Linus, I have Mac OS X (which I guess can run Linux stuff?). I'd like to win an Ironman game anyway before I try PosChengBand. Was doing well except for having so few ?phase doors. Debated taking on Gorlim. Decided I could since he didn't have a lot of HP and I didn't see anything nasty in his monster history but of course it got refreshed when I started playing the Nightlies. So he casted two bolts of raw magic in one turn (I was at +5 speed). Oh well, time to see what sort of luck I get in my next attempt.

                            Oh. That is more complex, as I don't think OSX comes with the rev suite installed. Back in the day, when I had a mac, it was the third install disk. Now you presumably have to download it? But it was even easier to compile. Just cd to the src directory and type
                            $ make install -f Makefile.osx

                            Yes, it's that easy... once you have the dev suite installed.

                              I'll give it a whirl when I complete Ironman.

                              Is it possible to export the messages during a game? A magic mushroom match just nearly ended my fledgling @ when I was taking on a priest and a couple Easterling warriors. The magic mushroom patch went to town and it was kinda nuts how many bad things were happening and how quickly my health was plummeting after I was slowed.

                                Well that was exceedingly exciting and fun while it lasted (and it lasted a fair bit considering).

                                Ran out of ?Phase,
                                Ran out of ?Teleportation
                                Never found _Teleportation
                                Ran out of !CSW
                                Picked up 3 !CCW near the end of my life.

                                Was using two rings of open wounds to great effect.
                                Then swapping one of them with a ring of damage [+10] I found.
                                I had two rings of FrAct that I couldn't wear. DL23 through DL25 was skin of my teeth fun. I'll recount the end:

                                Took down Bolg son of Azog by the skin of my teeth. Then Mim? (DL24) the disenchanter showed up immediately after before I could check the loot.. I actually could have beat him but I quaffed an unknown potion before the bolg fight and got stat swapped: wisdom for Dex. I had him almost dead (so many uniques I killed with ~20 health, one with 12 health out of 250 after I ran out of ?Phases). Had I not quaffed that potion I would have had the damage to beat him. I did forget to use my staves of CLW but not sure they would have done anything against Mim. It was a really exciting game, though.

                                I wish I could have seen what Bolg had dropped; maybe I should have moved in towards Mim to grab at least one of the items, but I thought I better run and heal and fight him that way (using the ring of open wound) which is what I did against another orc unique who I so so so barely beat (he really should have killed me but I got lucky and killed the energy vortex with like one blow which was blocking my way to keep him from hitting me [he moves at my speed so he can never attack me as long as I move; he was a blue orc unique], I had like 30 health when I hit the energy vortex and got to move before the orc unique could hit me. BTW, I was wielding a stoneskin curse rapier and the energy vortex was breathing on me in a hallway and was doing very little damage; so not sure all how much electricity I was actually conducting? Though he was some distance from me.

                                Helluva game, though; one of the funnest I've had yet, I think! I think I'm gonna try HT Warrior this time for the faster level gains. And I'm not doing the slow and safe method; I will dive because it's so much more fun, even if it's suicide as Ironman. It was fun putting those open wound rings to such great use! I woulda died ages ago without them. Massive heals for that period of the game.
