So I started a new game of Angband this afternoon. Decided to go for a high elf paladin, hadn't played a paladin in a long time.
On level one or two, I forget which, I got a nice +5/+4 Maul, giving me about 17.9 points of damage per turn or thereabouts. Cool, I thought, that will help me speed through the early levels.
Indeed it did, I was rocking and rolling. Soon, in fact, on DL 7, I discovered a Longbow of Power (+5, +15) to go along with it. Noice! I didn't have any arrows on me, but it would help me soon enough.
After that level was explored, I found myself so loaded up with unidentified scrolls & wands that I decided to go back. I had enough money to buy a Rapier of Flame (+6, +4) and get some other doodads to help me on my second trip into the dungeon.
So I go back down and when I get to dungeon level 8, I get a 3-9 rating on that level. A 9 rating--holy cow. That shit never happens to me. So I explore around, killing things wantonly with my Sword of Flame until, finally, I found Mr. 9. It was a Ring of Speed +8. (insert cartoon character surprised reaction here).
Well, that was cool. So I go down to DL 9. I start tootling around and eventually happen to glance down and notice that this level is rated a 1-9!!! After some fevered exploring, I find the spellbook Wrath of God. Sweet! It can't help me now, but it is great to know it will be there when I can use it.
So I calmed down and continued to explore the rest of the level, just for shits and giggles. In the very last room, I found an unidentified rod. I have no identify ability with me, but I figure, what the heck, I'll just try it against the wall and see what happens. Well, what happens is that I get reeeeeeeeel fast all of a sudden. It was a Rod of Speed.
So at this very moment I am sitting here on DL 9 with a 14th level half-elf paladin who happens to be at +18 speed.
I guess karma is paying back for deciding not to murder all those hobos!
This will be an interesting game. I give myself even odds that I will get cocky and careless and die.
