    AARiiiiiiight!

So I started a new game of Angband this afternoon. Decided to go for a high elf paladin, hadn't played a paladin in a long time.

On level one or two, I forget which, I got a nice +5/+4 Maul, giving me about 17.9 points of damage per turn or thereabouts. Cool, I thought, that will help me speed through the early levels.

Indeed it did, I was rocking and rolling. Soon, in fact, on DL 7, I discovered a Longbow of Power (+5, +15) to go along with it. Noice! I didn't have any arrows on me, but it would help me soon enough.

After that level was explored, I found myself so loaded up with unidentified scrolls & wands that I decided to go back. I had enough money to buy a Rapier of Flame (+6, +4) and get some other doodads to help me on my second trip into the dungeon.

So I go back down and when I get to dungeon level 8, I get a 3-9 rating on that level. A 9 rating--holy cow. That shit never happens to me. So I explore around, killing things wantonly with my Sword of Flame until, finally, I found Mr. 9. It was a Ring of Speed +8. (insert cartoon character surprised reaction here).

Well, that was cool. So I go down to DL 9. I start tootling around and eventually happen to glance down and notice that this level is rated a 1-9!!! After some fevered exploring, I find the spellbook Wrath of God. Sweet! It can't help me now, but it is great to know it will be there when I can use it.

So I calmed down and continued to explore the rest of the level, just for shits and giggles. In the very last room, I found an unidentified rod. I have no identify ability with me, but I figure, what the heck, I'll just try it against the wall and see what happens. Well, what happens is that I get reeeeeeeeel fast all of a sudden. It was a Rod of Speed.

So at this very moment I am sitting here on DL 9 with a 14th level half-elf paladin who happens to be at +18 speed.

I guess karma is paying back for deciding not to murder all those hobos!

This will be an interesting game. I give myself even odds that I will get cocky and careless and die.

Umm, so I am on DL18 right now and by now my character is level 18 and has found leather gloves of power and a Ring of Speed +7. Two rings of speed, a rod of speed, and wrath of god, all below DL20. This has never happened to me before.

This reminds me of a great April Fools joke from rgra, back in the day.
        Edit:
On dl 24 you will find a vault. The first sign it is there will be:
The shambling mound shrieks for help
        8 monsters start moving faster
        The drolen breathes gas

I bought a pair of Elven Boots of Speed +8, so now my character has +23 speed, +33 when sped with the rod or potion. I have never had such fast speed so soon. He is CL 31 now. The high elfness is starting to slow him down now. Got 7 spellbooks.

I'd probably replace one of those rings with a damage or stat ring. That speed is really high for early in the dungeon, especially if you have unlimited haste self. For a melee character, it is all about how much damage you can do per unit time--assuming sufficient CON.

And certainly resist poison is a good choice for walking around, if you tend to have problems with instadeath from undetected monsters.

I now have poison resistance, thanks to an amulet of trickery. My stats are also pretty good at the moment, with two of them maxed out (str, dex) and the others getting up there.

I've gone back and forth about replacing one of the ROS with a ring of damage, but I've really appreciated the speed. If I got something else with a little more speed to partially compensate, I might do that with my lesser ROS. But even without ROD, my current weapon is not bad for where I am; it has 302 dmg vs creatures not resistant to fire, 302 vs animals, 302 vs evil, 34o vs demons, 414 vs dragson, 414 vs undead, 340 vs trolls, 340 vs gians, 340 vs orcs (overkill) and 265 vs others.

Yes, let us follow this progress on the Ladder. It would make for an interesting read.
“We're more of the love, blood, and rhetoric school. Well, we can do you blood and love without the rhetoric, and we can do you blood and rhetoric without the love, and we can do you all three concurrent or consecutive. But we can't give you love and rhetoric without the blood. Blood is compulsory. They're all blood, you see.”

I hate posting non-wins to the ladder, but I will definitely post it if he gets all the way. I just noticed that in the artifacts I am wearing, I have two different activation abilities of the "faster for a variety then slower", so this guy seems destined to be built for speed.

I really need to find an artifact right now with telepathy to replace my headgear of telepathy, because I've got a great headgear artifact that I'd like to use. I could also use a piece of quality gear with hold life, because that's a swap for me right now. Bodykeeping is also a swap because I don't have much stat protection.

Telepathy on as a random ability shows up pretty often on ego items--very often I use a cloak ot magi for it; less often, a bow of Lothlorien or crown of the magi. I used to use *Slay Evil* weapons quite often before they were nerfed.

Yes, hopefully I should get something before too long. My bow artifact right now gives me, among other things, +4 strength, +4 tunnelling, resistance to fear and confusion, see invisible, and sprinting, so a bow would compete with that. A crown of the magi would compete with the other nifty artifact I'd like to use. My current artifact cloak has Rnether (my only such) and sprinting. right now armor, shield or even perhaps gauntlets would be more desirable; those are among my more replaceable items right now.

Sprinting isn't all that useful, since when it wears off, your speed drops by 20. It's a bit like the risk of Kavlax breathing gravity at normal speed.

It is something I would not use in a free-for-all or some place like a vault, but it is usually safe to use against singletons.
