    *Aquirement*

    I just found a scroll of *Aquirement* in a small vault on dL31. Should I read it now or wait till I'm deeper? Is it noticably more likely to get me better stuff if I wait a few levels?

    People often wait to 2000', where a lot of artifacts are native.

      Keep it at home until you're ready to use it (it's not fireproof) -I'd dive a deep as possible in a short period of time -say, 2000' - 2500' - read it and then ascend a bit if that depth is just too suicidal for you...

        Surely acquirement requires an 'excellent' item,
        so the item generated is +10lvl already....

            They create a probably desireable item next to you when read.
            If you can convincingly pretend you're crazy, you probably are.

              Speaking of acquirement... isn't it somewhat pointless to implement a rare item whose only use is to disappear and create a different rare item? I suppose there's limited gameplay utility in that you must protect a scroll from fire and acid before you can read it... but it still seems redundant. Why not just create the final product to begin with?

                    I see it as an "artifact lottery".

                      Do i need an item to start with? how does dungeon depth affect it? Is there some way to guide what kind of item with be created?

                        No.
                        Deeper = Better item.

                            For the most part, deeper means after div 10. Not much diff between reading at 30 and 39, but a noticeable diff between 39 and 40.

                              And Acquirement is often a bit disappointing. The first one I ever read gave me Gondor, but I've hardly ever gotten anything worthwhile from them since. I remember an amusing thread on RGRA a long time ago where someone (maybe Win Bentham) mentioned reading Acquirement, getting trash, and then finding a great artifact under a pile of rubble a few turns later. I think it was titled something like "rubble: the new acquirement?" If it wasn't, it should have been .

                              Anyway, if you're close to the end of a decade of levels it might be worth waiting to read it, but I wouldn't carry it or store it too long. You might get really lucky, but you'll more likely just get some useless ego weapon.
