how to face sauron...

idiot
urg...
sauron is dead... but me too.
he was less of a problem than i expected, the only annoying thing was him constantly teleporting away...then i went on to face morgoth...
and then things happened as i had feared:
got stunned and made the mistake of trying to heal myself with the spell instead of a potion.
failed, and morgoth summoned uniques.
i tried to teleport self (again with the spell... idiot...)
and got killed by vecna, gothmog and morgoth and some lichs...
pity.
(of course i forgot to make a dump after dying...idiot...)Comment

You got a valuable lesson: never use escape method that can fail in situation where death is highly probable in next turn. And also "small probabilities cumulate", so 1% fail tried 100 times has high probability get you killed.
Better luck next time.Comment

Yeah, if you rely on a spell to save your life enough times, eventually even the smallest fail rate will catch up to you.Comment

i honestly thought i HAD learnt this lesson already.
but it simply happens that i want to... dare the RNG.
actually these were more or less my thoughts when i did it: "You don't DARE to do this now, do you??" It did.
But hope dies last, maybe i really got it now... or maybe i have to learn it the hard way... ehh...Comment

well, and my warrior arrived at dlvl 98 (last time it took me about 60-70 times the amount of time, guess i'm in suicidal mood but the rng seems to like me...
but i didn't finish stat-gaining + i used/burnt the few scrolls of *banishment* i had found...
with stats i guess i should soon be done soon, but i guess scrolls of banishment are my only secure way to get through the final fights.
now my question would be: where is their native depth so i can scum a bit?
i did so a bit on lvl 98 but with little success. potions of *healing* are also still pretty rare in my stock so their native depth would be interesting too...
thanks in advance!Comment

Actually that is a good place to scum for endgame stuff, because many weaker consumables do not appear as often there any more, so relative frequency to get healing, *healing* and life as well as banishment and *destruction* scrolls goes up.
Just kill monsters without {good} drop to get them. Hunt orcs, giants and trolls. Even novice rangers can give you what you want this deep.Comment

HA!
I took revenge!
Morgoth is dead finally and i have my first win!!!
i got bored with scumming pretty soon and decided it was time for the final fight...
was a bit worried as i felt i had too few consumables: 3 healing, ~5 *healing*, 4 rods of healing, no Runes of Protection.
3 banish, 5 mass banish, 4 *destruction*...
apart from that i had a nether res hole which worried me a bit. but with my glaive of pain i did 650 dam/round against morgoth...
loved the fight itself, it was pretty close, i survived with 2 *healing* left.
but actually i loved that fight! fighting morgoth seems completely different from all the other fights. i loved the changing terrain, trying to only TO the bigger threats so i could stay in the middle of trolls etc. in order to keep him from summoning nasty stuff next to me, hiding away in a corner quaffing 5 CCW in order to save !healing...
usually i had read it to be anticlimatic, but to me it wasn't. on the contrary it was clearly the highlight of the game! maybe i'd feel different if i had been better prepared, but like this i loved it!
anyway, i guess i'll try to be faster next time... the first half of the game seemed really fast to me (playing really carelessly, i didn't bother scumming for FA or basic four, i simply went down every stair i found)...
but then in the end i slowed down quite a bit.. i even killed almost all uniques (vecna/witchking/lungorthin/baphomet + the vampire messenger were left i think) and the scumming for consumables took quite a while... problem was i never had immunity to fire and i was usually too lazy to visit town and bring home loot, so all the banish/destruction scrolls got burnt on the wayand i had to build up a completely new stock on lvl ~98...
well, i'll go to bed happily now, and from tomorrow i'll try to focus on university no angband for a while!
ah, and actually i have 2 more or less irrelevant questions:
am i right that there are only ~3 ringwraiths in angband??
and what happens if you read a create traps scroll on dlvl 100 before defeating morgoth? can it happen that a trap door is created? (guess you took care of that but it came to my mind and asking seemed easier than testing)...
thanks again for all the help!
Edit:
oh right, the dump:
oh, and i continued playing a bit afterwards, carrying grond and the crown of morgoth... dealing 2000 damage + earthquakes make the game slightly less challenging but i really enjoyed it for a while, finally attacking balrog and undead pits without having to consider the dangers... very niceLast edited by Gockel; May 22, 2011, 02:39.Comment
