Finally WINNER - High Elf Fighter

    Hi all,

Much thanks to you guys on the forum plus some patience and careful play I finally made my first win! I'm quite proud, it's just too bad my friends don't understand why I brag :-)

It took quite some effort and many attempts. Started a year and a half ago. Nethack many times before that. Mostly played fighters but tried different races. This time high elf instead of half troll which I think was a big improvement. Avoided aggravation thanks to Timo's reminder in a thread. That helps more than I thought.

In all I'd say it was a great experience and I was really nervous playing the last two levels from a hotel room respectively a small cafe in Prague (close to the forum server perhaps?). So I even forget some things I had decided to use but it worked out allright anyway.

Many of the much feared unique's were quite easy to kill with this fighter. Sauron was especially disappointing, but maybe I din't kill him, it might have ben a yeek in disguise. Morgoth was tough though, as was Vecna (I never killed him) and some others.

    What now, dwarf priest perhaps?

    /Mathias

          Congrats +1

Sadly I can't remember my first win. I think it was quite an achievement at the time, so probably I was excited.

I'm very close to my first win and I find the same thing to be true. The high uniques of legend are falling easily and don't even think that I have that great of a kit. Sauron is proving a bit of a challenge. I have no trouble harming him, I just can't quite finish the job. I'm just wandered around DL99 TOing him while looking for a source of speed so I could engage him once again. I exactly don't fear him, heck I brought CSW for healing this time and I don't even have a means of teleportation (except for phase and TL), but it seems he always summons... and his hits to disenchant suck, so I want to be as fast as possible. IMO it may be that too many high uniques have the same resistance hole, but what do I know.

Don't get too cocky. Its not what Sauron can do, it what he can summon. Imagine getting caught in a room full of time hounds Unless you have a way to kill them quickly or *destruct* you will be dead pretty soon. Also get your speed up, getting double moved on sucks.

Summons are not that bad problem if you fight him in twisty corridor. It doesn't need to be ASC, just corner in corridor.

I would try to find resistance to disenchantment before melee anything with disenchant melee-attack.

Really? If you've taken out Tarrasque and Vecna, then Sauron shouldn't be too much trouble. I'd defo get Disenchantment resist for him, and res Nexus is essential. Taking him on without !CCW and _teleport seems risky to me. I usually melee him in an ASC on a fully mapped (!enlightenment) level. If he teleports away, try to find him again quickly; before he heals.

rNexus is needed for tele-level, and you get saving throw against that, so with perfect saving throw it is not needed. Warriors rarely have that, but Priests pretty much always do. Other classes are somewhere between those two.

I can never seem to catch the Tarrasque when it's alone. There always seems to be a more promising target to go after, so he gets TO'd *and again as needed), not that I haven't runs into it a bunch of times. I think the my other problem is that it breathes a thing or two that I don't currently resist and I've long heard of the death by Tarrasque horror stories...

@ Timo, Sauron did TL me once, thus the need to look for a new source of speed. But the bigger problem is that I'm playing a slightly dated version of DaJ and the intelligent uniques use smart_AI by default. This cause him to teleport away whenever he gets low on health (and repeat). At least that's what I think is going on. I'm not complaining though, I'll get him eventually.

EDIT: And now he's he's dead. He tried to TL me with 1 * left, after of course teleporting with 3 *'s left. He dropped nothing useful and then I took the stairs down before my Plantir recharged, and I have no other means of detection/mapping.

As for the summons, I prefer to deal with them the old fashion way, by killing them (mostly, maybe a few get TO's and killed later). I've only used one ACS this game. To kill the Leranean Hydra, the first big summoner I met. I'm trying hard to avoid all the cheese. Ya know, ASC's, destructing vaults, scumming for supplies, buying out stores, farming etc...

                        Congratulations brother!
My real life twin brother just became a WINNER, and I have cheated death this time too, so I'm a LOOSER. But still, practice makes perfect, right?

I'm an Arch-Mage and just had a decent 30 minutes on level 99 and 100 where I found Enya, Feanor and Soul keeper.

Level 100 is easy to loot as Mage, after luring P up into a corner.
I even found the One Ring! on one of my many runs, but...

I have no idea what to do against P!

No magic seems to hurt him, no arrows (Bard), no weapon damage (F Bluecloak).
I keep trying, but have to teleport away before he's taken any visible damage.

Any ideas? the forum says Mages have an easy endgame, and sure: banish makes a smooth ride, but mr Morgoth seems to be the exception.

Magic hurts him just fine. Use wands of annihilation or meteor swarm or rift. Some people prefer manastorm. It depends upon your CL and how many wands of annihilation you manage to collect and which exact version you are playing.

He has so many hitpoint it takes many attacks to reduce him 10% to see a * go away. Just keep plugging away.

                            Thanks!

I did save (almost) all Life-, *Heal*- and Restore-Mana potions for Morgoth:
these plus some Healing- and Magi-staffs made it possible stay close to P.

The Mass Banish spell, Greater Recharging and Rift-spells did the trick!
(Though his mana storms gave me a scare at times...)

Hard work. And I cheated this time too.
(Before I found the last spellbok, I died several times)
Wonder if I'll ever become a true winner?

                            /nic

                            ps.
but I do long for the sweet taste of WINNING,
and since my brother will keep taunting me as a master geek
untill I too do it right, I'll probably start my next try... today.

If we're talking about V, chaos strike also works just fine. Rift is probably the worst choice re damage per mana point.
