    Fun with half-trolls

    You hit the Salamander.
    You have slain the Salamander.
    Welcome to level 2.
    The Kobold shaman hits you.
    *** LOW HITPOINT WARNING! ***
    You hit the Kobold shaman.
You have slain the Kobold shaman.
    Welcome to level 3.
You see a Scroll titled "or gaiens cus".
You have a Scroll titled "or gaiens cus" (g).
    You hit the Kobold shaman.
You have slain the Kobold shaman.
    Welcome to level 4.

Sadly, I ran out of high-value targets to kill after that. But three levels in three kills seems pretty good to me! I'm dealing 13.3 damage/blow at 2 blows/round, thanks to a (+2, +2) warhammer that Farmer Maggot dropped.

    I prefer:

    The flask of oil breaks
You have slaing Grip, Farmer Maggot's Dog
    Welcome to level 2
    Welcome to level 3
    Welcome to level 4

Happens to me about once every 6 games or so. Then again there's the guy who got 32 levels with his first kill.

Okay, I'm just gonna tack this onto this thread instead of making a new one.

This character has been ridiculously lucky. Let's recap:

Mughash dropped randart boots of +9 speed/stealth, at around dlvl 12 or so. IMO any item with speed modifiers greater than +5 should not modify any other stats. Stealthy trolls are weird.

I've found two randart launchers. One gives +5 speed, the other gives +2 shots and is a heavy crossbow.

I have a randart shield with combat boosts, +2 speed, and basic resists + fear -- perfect for a warrior.

I already have 4 potions of Healing and 9 potions of Speed.

And this is all by 1800' (I went down right before recalling), and in only 25k turns! I kinda feel like I shouldn't play this guy any more since what little challenge there was in the early/mid game (for warriors) has been basically obliterated. About the only annoying thing he's had to deal with so far is a lack of trap detection -- I only got a -TrapLocation at the end of the previous dive. Uvatha also showed up at 1600', which was an interesting but doable challenge.

I guess the alternative to abandoning him is to chain-read all those ?DeepDescent and toss him down to 2800'.

Oh, and fizzix: personally, I prefer getting my levels from multiple kills, because it's harder to do.

I dunno. I still like the classic Quickband message:
        The Baby blue dragon dies
        Welcome to level 2
        Welcome to level 3
        Welcome to level 4
        Welcome to level 5
        Welcome to level 6
        Welcome to level 7
        Welcome to level 8
        Welcome to level 9
Of course, that doesn't compare to FA thrall mode:
        The Vrock dies
        Welcome to level 2
        ...
As for +9 STL/Speed artifacts for a half-troll... That's a legendary combination from RGRA by the legendary player Cliff Stamp. If you have it, use it. It's the only way to get truly epic wins. (As in: 85K turn win for NPP H-T Ranger.)

Note to those that don't know Cliff achievement. That is game turns, not player turns. Truly legendary.

Usually you don't have much of a choice when Fang or Grip comes at you on dlevel 1...

Sadly, that was a mistake. You should have sold the warhammer and bought the best weapon giving three blows and some enchant scrolls. Even if no enchant scrolls for sale, three blows with an unenchanted rapier would be almost as good and you would be better off because you could buy a lot of other consumables with the cash. I'd have sold it even if the only 3 blow weapon available was a whip.

You're likely right, but I don't worry too much about hyperoptimizing my first weapon with a half-troll. He'll pancake everything he runs into anyway until he finds something better than anything he could have bought.

That's why I wouldn't mind going even with a whip. However, an extra couple !CCW or ?teleport or stack of ?dObj could make a huge difference.

That was hilarious, but sadly a buggy compile (it was a fruitbat, IIRC - it had about 500hp and was worth stupendous xp).

I did, however, once get 5 levels from a single kill in a legit game ... at cl21. I had a 5d3 randart whip with KILL_UNDEAD, and I took out Adunaphel who was quite a long way OOD. I don't know how often that happens to people but it's the first time I've ever got more than two levels in one go after cl10.

OK, its not Vanilla, but The Plain Gold Ring in Hengband is worth something like 10,000,000xp for the kill. I've had ninjas go from CL40 to CL50 killing that guy. Of course, most characters just can't kill this monster, no matter how powerful they become.

And the madness just doesn't stop. While reading those ?DeepDescent, I popped into a room with an ancient gold dragon, killed him...and got Blue Dragon Scale Mail of Speed (+9). He's level 30 and his speed is +25. I'm starting to wonder if there's a bug in the current build making nice drops more common...

I would have some fun first. Chase demons and provoke angel explosions.
